"Steel" marked pintle hook on slats - right?

Post by Toby W » Mon Nov 12, 2007 5:40 pm

Let's shine some light on the pintle hook markings of slat grills.
If you think you have a pintle hook, that's original to your slat grill, please list the markings and the serial#:

Example:

Serial#: I00596
Bottom: STEEL and T60A
Top : STEEL and T62
Bolts : TR20

Thanks for participating.

So there is some evidence that a transition may have occured from STEEL to STL marked hooks between slats I00596 and II8513? :D
Anybody else?
Thanks,

Here is the original pintle hook from 101871. Delivery date is 12-4-41.It is marked STEEL. Completely spelled out.
One odd thing I noticed when I took it off is that the top bolts were 3/8" bolts and the bottom were 7/16". The top holes in the frame were 3/8" size holes.

Slat grill pintle

Post by mstokes » Wed Feb 06, 2008 9:01 am

Hi Toby,

My slat still had what I believe to be it's original pintle hitch. MB 105647 DOD 12-22-41. The bolts used to mount it are also the original bolts 7/16th X 1-1/4" fine thread (TR20). After carefully removing the bolts with the half turn forward and one turn backward method I found the pintle hitch to be rust welded to the mounting plate.

Be aware that the "Steel" brand was also used on GP's.. there are slight differences in the location of the name "STEEL" on the castings...
What you may have could be either a Slat or Ford GP...

To check the differences, photos there ....see:-

I think that when you find two of the bolts on the pintle are LARGER, then that indicates that at some time a set of EYEBOLTS were put on for trailer chains....you might want to check the tub on jeeps with two oversize pintle bolt holes for a trailer socket installation.

To view an even bigger image of the hitch you can see the driver's side view or the passenger's side view.

You can view the rest of the photos of MB #102367 here.

Hi guys,
as you know I have one of the late slat grill # 124991.
I think the pintle hook is the original (who would find another pintle hook in Argentina and changed it ?)
It's completly plain. No STEEL, no T62, no T60.

Would be interesting to hear from other slat grill owner.

is it possible that the pintle hook of your jeep has already been replaced during its service in war? maybe it was broken then?
