Postby howard » Tue Nov 15, 2005 10:33 am

What is the purpose of the elongated hole at the base of one end of the fender box??

My understanding is that the hole is for access for heating hoses for the "winterized" version of the M38. There should be plate like a heat exchanger under the battery tray that is filled with heated coolant.
The cooland is heated in a heater that is gas fired that provides a source of heated coolant. The batery in the cowl is also heated and for that there are two holes in the firewall, that are covered in most of the M38s, to allow hoses to reach the bottom of the other battery box.
My first M38 was winterized at one time before I got it. I still have the coolant gas heater. In that m38 the passenger side fender was modified with two holes to permit two hoses from going to the cowl battery box.
I have not seen any installed, but for what i saw in my first m38 the heater was probably mounted near or in the hole on the passenger floor side that is normally covered with a plate.

Not to hijack this thread, but does anyone have a parts drawing (or exploded view) of the inside of the under-hood battery box showing the battery tray and the heating hose under the tray?

m38 battery heaters

Postby grant j » Tue Nov 15, 2005 11:24 pm

Some M38s? and M38A1 jeeps had a coolant heater blower in between the seats to provide "warmth".......My 1952 Arctic equipped M38 had the original battery heater trays and heaters with most of the parts when I bought it in 1992.. I still have all those parts , but did not reinstall the battery heater stuff. I think I obtained copies of the installation/instructions from Portayal Press.(I'll look after sending this message) I can send email pics of the heater and/or battery trays if need be.

I installed the hot water personnel years ago. It sits in front of the toolbox. The following is from the data plate:
Stock no. G249-8682953
Model no. EA M38
Rating 23,000 BTU/HP
Volts. 24 Amps 4.5
EA Laboratories, Inc.
Brooklyn 5, NY. USA
I believe the kit was dated 1958 and it has Packard (rubber) connectors.
