US water cans

Post by Tom in Iowa » Sat Apr 05, 2003 3:10 pm

Luca:
My understanding is that the cans with the pressure relief valve were used for water and hot food transportation. That is just what I have heard and is by no means certain
Thank you for the manifactures lists.
Some were also made by U S Metal Can Co, but that may have been post war

Hi list

I have a 41 water with a screw lid. It was made by NESCO. Was there other makes in 41? Also did gas cans have the straight 2 ear lids and the water have the straight 4 ear lids?

Tom,
Early gas cans (at least thru 41) have the 2 straight ears screw on lid. After 41 there is the 4 rounded ear screw on lids. I think sometime in the later 50's is when the 4 straight ear screw on lid comes into being. All water cans have a large cam opening lid.

Hi Mike

I have( 2) 1941 water cans with screw lids. One can has only a W on the top center side and other one has a W in the same spot and USA on one bottom center side and QMC on the other bottom center side. Both were made by NESCO.

Well Tom,
Looks like I have to revise my info :!: I guess that based on your info 41 cans were the same for water and gas but marked differently. I have 42 dated cans that are screw, 4 rounded ears for gas and so marked and cam top for water and so marked. I could see how it would be easy to mistakenly fill gas in a water and vice versa. Guess thats why in 42 the change.
Learn something new every day :!: Thanks

U S Water cans

Post by Tom in Iowa » Fri May 30, 2003 1:51 pm

I might add to this conversation with an observation. I think that all military gas cans had the tabs on the screw cap rolled over while the later civilian cans had the tabs sticking straight up.
Early 41 cans had straight tabs but there were only two.

Hi Tom in Iowa

I have original WW2 lids in either 2 or 4 straight ear types. They have a nonrubber gasket glued to the lid. These have a longer chain than the curled ear or post war/civilain types. I can not post a picture but if someone else can I can email them some the post.

Tom,the 41 gas AND water cans ALL had a two eared screw lid. Later the gas cans had a four eared lid, while the water/food cans switched to the large cam lid. Also the chain in 41 was a different pattern. As for the 41 Gas manufacturers question,I do own a 41 Wheeling.I do not have any 41 W(ater) can,and I would like one.

By the way, would you keep one 2eared lid for me? I will check out how to let you have the money in the less expensive way.Thank you.

Take this as a personal opinion based on my own experience: Cavalier was the easier, followed by Monarch. Other makes are kind of scarcer: also, not all the years have the same scarcity pattern.43 for instance is not as common as 42 or 44. Maybe elsewere there is a different pattern.
Of course the 41 WATER can is a different story: scarce, and not cheap.

A good friend and co-worker just gave me a water can. The inside is yellow. I am not sure if it is paint or coating,I have not looked at it that good. There is no dates that I have found yet. There is "C" stamped on the sides. The cap is the cam style. Although different from the fuel cans.
Any ideas where I may find a date stamp. There is nothing on the bottom. I can send a pic if anyone is interested.

I was a flea market last week in a rural area of Oklahoma. One ventor had two old army gas cans for sale for $5 each.

I know nothing about army gas cans, but having read about gas can interest on this forum, I stopped and took a closer look at the two cans.

One was marked USA on the lower bottom of one of one side, and QMC on the other side. There was a G or C (?) stamped on both of the upper sides. Bottom was rusted complete away.

The other can was marked US on one lower bottom and nothing on the other lower side. It also had the G or C on the upper sides. Some rust near the bottom.

Both had tab screw caps, but I didn't count the tabs.

I will be returning to that area on June 6 if anyone is instrested in the cans.
