Thread on restoring a body

Post by Spencer54 » Thu Sep 14, 2017 1:56 am

Can anyone point me in the direction of a post that details restoring a body and making repair panels at all.

I've had a search but can't seem to find anything?

Thanks

Spencer, don't know if this is what you're looking for but thought it shows some nice fabrication work on an early GPW tub

John/Hell-fire posted some photos of the ground up rebuilding of his MB tub here, excellent job done

Hope this helps

Restoration threads are mostly on the general g503 page.

I always enjoyed Zeph's GPW restoration thread. You need to fix the photo bucket issue but he's linked a work around that works.

Here is how I do it; cut out the rusted places in square panels. Get some sheet steel and cut those to fit in the holes. Hold them in with magnets, or the little T shaped sheet metal holders. Weld in new panel. Grind off the welds. I use 16 gauge steel; why? It is thicker than the original steel, but it MUCH easier to weld in as it is easier to control welding heat that way. I am doing an M38 right now.
Ninety percent of a jeep is flat panels; for the curved ones, I bend steel around pieces of pipe, etc. For 90 degree bends, I clamp steel to think steel bar and use a hammer to make the bend. Easier than it sounds.

Thanks they are perfect!

Wish I knew Spanish....

Bit I'm struggling with is the transition to the gearbox hump, but plenty of inspiration there.
