Scout car steering box.

Post by mike2u » Wed Sep 13, 2017 7:57 am

As I try to nail down my steering shimmy, I have noticed that I have about a little less then a 1/4 of play in the wheel when turing. It seems the steering scepter is telescoping out as I turn the wheel. Is this amount of play normal? Also, where might I look for some new bearings for the steering box to correct this issue?

Thanks.

I believe your steering is ROSS and like the JEEP, the ratio of the worm is tighter in straight ahead than at the extremes.

It just seems odd to me that the steering shaft would come out of the box as I turn it. I had thought that indicates bad box bearings.

I'm not sure if this will help you but here is a link to my steering column rebuild for my M2 halftrack http://halftrackinfo.com/index.php?topic=941.15. The early M2 halftracks use the same steering box as the scoutcar. If there is travel in the column shaft then it is the bearings. You will need to disassemble the column to check the bearings. Check with either Rod Shaver or Gary Hebding for parts. Some parts are interchangeable with the M35 duce and a half.
