Cj2a chaff screen

Post by 42GPW » Sat Aug 12, 2017 7:58 pm

On the outside/front of the chaff screen there are 2 brackets. Not the 4 on the back for clamping on the grill. What are those 2 brackets for?

I have a customers 46 column shift in the shop now that has a chaff screen with the brackets.
My guess, and that is what it is,
To hold a winter cover for the radiator during winter operation.
There is also a strap loop top center. My guess is that would be to roll the canvas cover up and stow it when not in use.
I have found pictures with a strap buckled to the loop. None of a canvas screen.

Update,
Went through most of the CJ pictures I have. Still no clue as to what goes on the brackets on the screen, but
Some photos show a strap that goes in the top center footsman loop, above the screen, that holds the windscreen down while laying on the hood blocks.
I did find pictures in AAW III that shows a winter cover that covers the entire hood and grill. Could not tell if the brackets came into play with this add on. Had something to do with improving heater function.
Still looking.

42 GPW:

I think those 2 brackets are the grab handles for removing the chaff screen from a CJ-2A once it has been installed. Pulling on them to remove the screen is much less damaging to the CJ-2A than trying to pry the screen off with a screw driver or tire iron.

I've seen winter radiator covers for the MB/GPW but do not recall ever seeing a factory authorized or even an after-market winter radiator cover for the CJ-2A. As Wolfman notes, the strap at the top center front of the CJ-2A radiator guard is for securing the windshield in its lowered, folded down position. The strap goes through the loop on the top inside center of the lowered windshield and then is secured by going through the buckle on the strap's bottom portion.

That makes good sense. Ive been researching this too. I dont feel its for a winter cover either. Pull tabs make more sense. Thank you for the reply and thought.

Follow up.
I am going to agree with Fred.
I got the CJ in the shop yesterday and took a closer look at the chaff screen.
Something could be hung on the two tabs in question but don't think that is the intended purpose.
The screen has two tabs on the inside, at the bottom, that hook into the slots in the grill. The two tabs at the top, on the outside, are bent up and something could be hung on them but like Fred, I think they are handles to give something to grab on to, to make it easier to remove the screen. There are two spring clamps on the inside of the top tabs that clip onto two of the grill bars to hold the screen in place.
The jeep has been stored here for a while and I have noted the screen but first time I really got up close and personal with it.
And that is the rest of the story.
