Re: Small collection of cans
The 41 water can used a 4 ear straight tab cap and the 41 gas can used a 2 ear straight tab cap. Both used non rubber gaskets ( the kind you don't lick or try to smell - think brake linings ). I have both styles available for $22.50 each including the shipping in the Us if anyone is needing any .

Re: Small collection of cans
I added a nice '43 CHATTANOOGA can to my growing collection over the weekend for just $7! Someone had used it to hold oil, so the inside is in remarkably good condition.

Re: Small collection of cans
I was able to add another can to the collection this weekend. $7 got me this '41 dated Nesco screw top water can. Usually the paint doesn't stick to these galvanized cans too well, but that's not the case here. Heavy white stripe around the can to ID it as Water, but someone has used it to hold fuel at some point. Also has the incorrect cap.
Some additional yellow stenciling on the base.

$10 yesterday got me this '45 dated NESCO fuel can. Still has some gasoline in it, so it's leak free!

Re: Small collection of cans
3 can in 3 weeks. I just can't leave a good can behind!
I visited the local recycling yard yesterday and came home with this '51 and '52 dated Radio Steel and M.C.C. stamped fuel can. Leftover parts that were used a year later? I think I've seen this dual stamped can discussed on here before...

Re: Small collection of cans
Dropped some more aluminum cans off at the recycling yard yesterday. I've got the guy there pulling out any fuel cans he finds for me. Well, he found another one and boy, was it roached bad. He seemed so happy to have found another one for me, that I couldn't leave it behind. $2 worth of aluminum and $4 for the fuel can put this guy at $2, so, not breaking the bank.
Even though it was pretty roached, it still seemed surprisingly solid. It'll get a bath in the electrolysis tank, but I hit it hard with the wire wheel and it came out looking much better!
Before... why did I bring it home!?!
After. Much better! '51 dated Radio Steel just like the last one.

Jason, what so you use in your electrolysis tank. I use Borax when I clean stuff.

Re: Small collection of cans
Steve, from the research I've done, Sodium Carbonate or 'Super Washing Soda' works best and that's what I use. But there's no hard/fast rule. Several different things will get the job done.Steve Webb wrote: ↑Mon May 28, 2018 4:40 amJason, what so you use in your electrolysis tank. I use Borax when I clean stuff.
I use a 150gal rubbermaid horse trough and hang the anodes on the side. A copper bar across the top to suspend the parts that I'm trying to remove the rust from. And an old battery charger that I picked up from the flea market for like $7 to push the charge. It works really well.
I can snap of picture of my setup if you're interested in seeing it.
