Willys MBT Drain Pic Needed

Post by Jon » Fri Oct 19, 2012 12:09 pm

As I'm about to complete the drain hole in my tub, would anyone have a close up photo of how the lower section is spot welded to the tub.
I pressed out what I think is correct, but as the Irish say........ To be sure, to be sure.

I've been going off Al Brass' photo of his Bantam, but mine is a Willys MBT. are there any differences....?

Some pics below of the pressing I made with some dies I knocked up and Al's pic.

Al called me from New Zealand and he put me straight on the Parts List for the screws, Listed as 2 x Screw No.10-32 x 3/8" with No.10 external lockwashers. Turns out that's 3/16" UNF.x 3/8" long
Parts List is downloadable from JeepDraw http://jeepdraw.com/images/jeepdraw/ADO ... RAILER.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; if anyone needs it.
I updated my Willys MBT Trailer page if you're interested http://www.jeepdraw.com/WILLYS_TRAILER_RESTORATION.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Any suggestions appreciated.

What I've done so far.....
This is the pressing I made for the actual drain in the floor, the hole needs enlarging, and some grinding yet to be done..

Jon, I am far from my trailers but I do not see any reason for the Bantam being different from a Willys ,since the tubs were made by the same factory.

Ah. yes. but!. this Willys of mine is very, very early, even has the cast center section on the axle.
And as Bantams and Willys varied on the shockie mounts, I needed to know if there were differences in this department too.
So, the question still remains.......

I love justification...... there is a difference....... at least as far as I can see from the photos I received this morning from Gerard.
Could others look and see if I missed anything I put on his photo other than the lugs and the flanging edge where it meets the ball.
Comments welcome naturally and thanks again to Gerard for sending me the photos.

Cheers

Jon, just been looking @ Williams post on waterproofing trailer. look down the post- his MBT from 44 looks similar in that the top lugs go in further to the centre.

Yes. I see what you mean.
I'll have to re-think the whole base plate too.....not so hard to do, just need to stamp out a new plate with squarer shoulders.

Stole these from Williams post......

Opinions welcome.
Going off the photo of Williams above......
Have I stamped this plate deep enough ?

Take no notice of the small ring in the center, that I need to remove so I can reverse punch the flange.
This is 16g plate which is what the original plate appears to be.. all I have to go off are photos.

If I was into that sort of thing Marty, which I'm not.......just want this trailer righteous . but if I can help someone who want one ...I will have the dies handy...
Might go fiddle with another test piece........still have the tabs to do yet and the buggers are curved.

Jon,
You do incredible work, how much pressure is involved in forming the metal around the dies?

I haven't measured the pressure, but I use a 20 ton press like you'd buy at a auto parts store, and 3 clicks of the elbow later and when I'm buggered, I stop pumping.

Made a few cock ups with the first pressing, it's the old story, you don't see the bad ones, just the good. Well I'm here to tell you not everything comes out the way you had hoped the first time, so today, after thinking about it I changed the dies a wee bit and it looks like I may be on to a winner...
The whole process will involve 3 small sets of dies (Male & Female), first makes the "dish" and gives an edge where the flange starts, second pushed the flange material out , the third will make the flange.. More work than I had hoped to do, but, it's actually fun experimenting and a good feeling when it all comes together.
I should have a set of photos tomorrow showing each stage.....provided all goes well.....and if it doesn't.....well, I'll decide then what I'll do.

These dies are made by you on a lathe, correct? Once made to your satisfaction, maybe you can add adrawing to your tools to make Jeepdraw listings!

Jon,are they differences between Bantam and Willys, or are they differences between different manufacturing years of ACM tubs?

Luca, I think your hypothesis is more on the money. My bet is that if two early trailers (Willys and Bantam ACM numbers must be close) can be found to do a comparison the findings will be they are the same. Whether it is a design change or possibly an ease of production change I believe the two will be alike. It just doesn't make sense the ACM would produce two different design for two different companies. Logistically it would be a nightmare to do so. Another thought, as tooling wears out and new arbors or dies are made, the chance of a slight change is there, especially during the hectic time of war, just as there could very well be a difference between two different presses.

Jon, if I were you I wouldn't stress over this. If you wait for a few more photos to trickle in you may see there is no difference between Willys and Bantam but between production times, machine presses, or what have you. This information can only be obtained if along with the photos you get the ACM number. That ACM number will tell you more than just the drain hole configuration alone. 8)
