Re: 1942 Ford Staff Car Barn Find
If they are the original markings and paint then I think you have a unique vehicle there!
I have read a number of articles in Army Motors on staff cars and I have the impression they are rare.
Congratulations on a terrific find,
Bill.

Re: 1942 Ford Staff Car Barn Find
Hi Troy
I am pretty sure that is is a civilian procurement car or a mock up
Contract cars never had the front civilian marking lights or rear civilian taillites. If they converted back to civilan form military the rear fenders would have holes for the military lighting. They had standard WWII tailights, just like the jeeps.
Also the wiring would be for a standard jeep type headlamp switch.
also the markings can not be original, during the war the dots were square, no round in the USA. and the font is wrong
Nice car though
Ernie

Re: 1942 Ford Staff Car Barn Find
Ernie, I don't think it's a mock up, but probably civilian procurement because there's OD paint in places that are hard to get to if you were just painting over the car. Stuff like the fire extinguisher bracket and other things have been there a very long time. I also found a old pennant from Ft Devens rolled up in the glove box! The blackout lights look NOS but were never installed, maybe issued with the car but never needed. Regardless it's a nice solid car seldom seen up here in rustland!

Congrats! Nice car! Well done!
I have a reg list from an Army Motors magazine!
Remember guys production seized on these civilian cars for specific purpose of making them staff cars. Whether they are or not, the intention was there to make the Fords, Chevys, Plymouth specifically.

Re: 1942 Ford Staff Car Barn Find
Is anyone interested in contract #'s, specs, and dates for the military and gov't Ford cars of WWII? I just got done researching it. My scanner is broken, so I'd have to retype the data from the documents manually. I'm not going to do it if there's no interest. I found a draft in the archives detailing the 9 main contracts.

Regardless of original or procured, a 1942 anything is rare as can be. You have a wonderful find! I'm jealous.

Re: 1942 Ford Staff Car Barn Find
I spoke to Joe Hall owner of Vintage Wiring. He confirmed he knew the history of the car. Old time horder from Maine bought it surplus from Ft Devens and drove it home. It was stored for many years until the barn fell in on it, hence the dent in the roof. The old man died and the son sold it to the guy I bought it from. I don't know if I mentioned it previosly but I did find a felt penant from Ft Devens rolled up in the glovebox.
