1942 GPW 80535
Just purchased this GPW, serial #80535, delivery date 11-19-42. This is my first jeep, so hopefully no one will mind me asking lots of questions and looking for pointers in how to go about restoring it. Has a MB block with a post war head. Needs a lot of work, front frame damage, rot in the rear floor, gauges and wiring missing. That's just the obvious stuff. Looking forward to starting the restoration this spring

Welcome to a rewording hobby, you've got a very good looking project vehicle there!! As has been said before take lots of photos of everything before and as you take it to pieces. As for questions ask away we all have gone through a learning curve with jeeps at some stage. The search feature on the forum may turn up answers to some of your questions as many of us have been through it already. Get some manuals and read as many books as you can get you hands on and enjoy the journey. What type of restoration are you planning a get it running and have fun with or a full nut and bolt factory class rebuild?

Thanks for the advice. I plan on a good motor pool restoration. Obviously I would like everything to be original but the fact that the engine is a bit of a mix and it does not have combat rims it will be probably deduct a few marks. As for everything else, it's all there (apart from the gauges and wiring). It came with a lot of parts, including windshield, bumperettes, hand holds, blackout light, tail lights, jerry can holder etc. The front frame damage has me a little nervous and I will need advice on that repair, the rot in the floor hopefully will not pose to much of a problem. Everything seems original, as most items have the F mark on them, I even noticed one on the hood hinge. The fuel tank has some issues, it's a large mouth, so probably not original to the vehicle and the drivers seat has been modified, rather crudely, to accommodate it. Most of the bonding straps are there, so apart from the engine being replaced I don't think it has been meddled with to much. Once I get it under cover and get it stripped I'll no more for what is in store.

I did purchase All American Wonder volumes 1 & 2 and also WWII Jeep Guidebook by Ren Bernier. If anyone has any other recommendations that may help with my restoration please let me know.

That's a great start for books Adam, you'll get a lot of info there. Very nice, and looks to be the original paint? That is VERY rare... I hope you will keep the original paint and preserve it (not that hard with this jeep, rock solid most of it). And to touch up new inserts or fixes you can use a paint that matches the original, without looking like a Dalmatian.
