My GPW's details are:

DOD: 04/14/1943
108175
USA 20371070

I know mine rolled of of the factory on its wheels, too. I ended up buying mine from a gentleman in Richmond, VA. From his understanding, it had likely been in that general area for at least 50ish years or so. Makes me think that she didn't go too far from the Louisville plant where it was build.

Skelly, I'd be curious what your USA number is, too. Also, I'll try to repost some fresh pics soon once I decide to find some motivation. Yours looks great, though! Especially in Normandy :)

Woohoo, I decided to finally make some time today and repost my pictures using the surfacezero/g503 site instead of worthless photobucket...Planning to post some pictures of my GPW engine rebuild that I'm currently working on in the near future.

Finally made some time to upload some pictures from this summer. Haven't enjoyed the GPW as much as I'd like, due to lack of time, but when I've been able to get it out it's been an absolute blast! Also, began pulling a part the original GPW engine I'm rebuilding. I've only worked on it two days so far, but progress has been good. Hoping to have the rebuild complete by spring so that I can make the engine swap before summer rolls around next year...I've got to stay focused, though, since next summer is sure to be here before we all know it again!

Here are a few of the engine, pre-breakdown:

Also, a couple from the Reading, PA MAAM WWII Weekend in early June. For those who have never been, put this on your list of places to travel to in the summer. It's an incredible experience and well worth the trip!

More pics to come soon...

Some pictures of the engine breakdown and the start of the block crack repair. Note Bubba's use of a grinder in his attempt to grind out the crack and then proceed to fill it with JB Weld...surprisingly, the friend who I got this block from drove his MB for over 5 years and several thousand miles with the crack fixed this way. Hopefully the lock-n-stitch kit works and can legitimately fix this crack this time around!

The hope is to have the crack finished in the coming weeks so we can pressure test it and then send the block off to the machine shop. I'm optimistic that the fix will work. With my luck, though, it'll leak worse than before

And a few more having fun just enjoying the GPW. The best part about having a strong running engine in the jeep is that I don't feel stressed or rushed with the GPW block rebuild. Of course I'd like to have it in as soon as possible, but when there is no time I don't feel the need to worry about magically finding some extra time to get it done

Parked next to a friend's CJ-7. It's an awesome jeep, but of course having an 'original' is much cooler

It's been a ridiculously busy end of summer and fall so far. Haven't made any more progress on the GPW engine rebuild, but I did deal with a steering rebuild do to a sector shaft failure...

Image

Not sure exactly what caused the little nub to shear off of the shaft itself, but fortunately it happened while I was moving the jeep by hand in the garage. Needless to say, I replaced the bushings, the shaft, and the worm gear, as it was damaged due to to the failure.

Image

Image

After two months of waiting for the time and parts to complete the steering rebuild, I finally was able to get it back together and drive it again. She steered great and ran even better! A great way to close the season for driving. I'll still likely take it out occasionally in the winter, but I'm not personally a fan of cold driving/riding...

The largest bright side of this fall is that my wife and I finally bought a house. This means that I no longer need to keep the jeep at my parent's house 130 miles from where I live and will finally have my own garage to store it in. I can't even control my level of excitement to be able to work on and drive the GPW whenever the hell I feel like it, rather than waiting weeks, and sometime over a month at at time! :D

Sean,
I am very impressed with the level of work you are doing and the quality. I am learning much by reading your posts. I'll be doing a VEP GPW next year, so i'll stop by often for advice and how to.

Cheers

Thanks gentleman, I appreciate the kind words! I've still got a full list of items I'd like to redo in order to truly "finish" my project, though. I am happy with the results so far, but there are plenty of items I quickly threw together do to my limited amount of time to work on this. Fortunately with the new house and my own garage, I should now finally have more time to work through that list and to finally get the result I want. :D

Sean...just remember that with home ownership comes the associated "chores" aka, the "Honey-Do List"....

That works like this:
The two of you sit down with pen and paper and she starts writing:

"One for me, one for you, one for me.....
One for me, one for you, one for me......
One for me, one for you, one for me...."

That is how your tasks will be rated against those the little woman envisions for the new house.
Welcome to the club.

Thanks for the heads up, Chuck! I won't complain too much off the bat, as the wife is at least letting me have the full two car garage for my toys without hesitation

Well, settled on my new house in early December and moved up from D.C. just before Christmas. Was also able to move the jeep down from PA last week, too. Unfortunately, it's been a bit too cold to really be able to enjoy having the jeep at my own house, but at least now I get to look at it and smell the canvas everyday when I open my garage door  There is also a nice wood stove in the garage, so that'll be fired up most weekends through the winter. Regardless of the weather, I now live about 13 feet from my jeep instead of 130 miles, and that makes me very happy :D
