MB 217454

Post by Ralph » Sun Jul 14, 2013 7:39 am

I bought this Willys in 2008 from this forum's FS page, after being a G503 reader/learner for several years prior to that.I used the Transportation Page to arrange transport from two states away.My thanks to Ron Fitzpatrick.
This MB was priced at 5k but the seller agreed to accept $3500.This jeep's engine and driveline was original and ran well. There was the usual other good and some bad:
No data tags,no rear seat, brakes barely worked, steering gear was goofy...the usual rust, radiator core leaking, missing gas tank, bolt ons, etc.
Some other good things were/are,a good title, frame tag,ACM 1 body original to the frame/engine
Sparton horn,filtrette....generator,distributor & regulator date-code correct to engine,..five good combat wheels, four new Denman NDT tires (with one wartime Firestone Groundgrip).....
I am now, almost five years later, with the frame mostly done, the transmission/transfer case about to be installed and the engine currently in the shop.I'll start from the day I drove it into the garage.

Nice MB! Was it a fire jeep, or was red simply the PO's choice?

Please send more pictures, showing your progress to-date.

Thanks, guys.I guess it could have been fire jeep at some point. One of the other paint layers under that red was a greenish-blue worn by a lot of old Texaco service jeeps that I remember in the late fifties-early sixties. Then there's that Robin-egg blue interior that somehow found it's way onto so many jeeps. The OD was there, with nice stars and numbers.

Engine had a replaced-but correct-head before I got it...CJ waterpump,Carter 636SA carb,...two boxes of parts with the deal held the air cleaner,filtrette cover,etc.,
Here is some of the rot and the gusset weld worms...have been told here that the front bumper is a CJ2...check out all the holes that were drilled for the CJ gas tank filler access...

I'd guess this msg on the glovebox and the antenna mount holes on the tub's rear show a radio at some point but who knows military/fire,??
I thought at first it had a heater but there were no holes through the firewall for hoses.
a wartime Gem oiler was in the parts box....
Tool boxes are good...

That sounds normal for tubes I've installed. I don't know HOW they keep getting pinched!

I don't think that interior color is "robin's egg" blue, but the blue on the sides and back might be. Interior is more of a "sky" blue to me. But that's just me. :)
Is it true real Jeeps have flat fenders?
Alone cannot you it resist!
