GPW 107098. A LOT CAN BE LEARNT!!!

Post by Ian Fawbert » Thu Jul 04, 2013 3:57 am

Hi all,

I snapped the pictures of this one while on holiday in the US in 2010. It was in a friends barn. Story is that the person he got it from bought it from the army, hardly drove it on any club runs but maintained it, realising its importance. When he passed, it was offered to my friend ( I think I have all that right).

Only downside is the motor has been removed for a rebuild- from memory, it has seized. My friend is rebuilding it with the knoweldge that original patina and attenditon to detail on reassembly is very important for this particular jeep.
IT IS NOT FOR SALE, PLEASE DO NOT BOTHER CONTACTING ME FOR DETAILS OF THE OWNER.

Best to go to the link. There are over 100 photo's to view.

I`ve posted a few here to wet your whistle!

Anyway, enjoy! In my opinion, there is ALOT TO BE LEARNT FROM THIS JEEP!

Hi Ian,

Great photo essay of a 4th Contract Dallas built GPW !!!!!!

Notice the parking brake firewall felt gromment that almost everyone ( including the repop'ers ) says was not used.

Thanks Ian for taking the time and effort to document this one and to provide all those photos! There is much there for guys who are interested in Factory restorations with regard to hardware and fittings and such....

It looks like this 4-2-43 GPW did not yet have the knock-out in the dash above the panel light switch!

Can't wait for more pics if they are available for the running gear!

Thanks Ian. Great jeep to compare original stuff too. The felt around the glove box is something always missing on restorations.

Thanks Ian, what a beautiful jeep. This has got to be the most complete visual record we have of an unmolested GPW. It should get sticky status IMO. Invaluable.

I also have a nice unrestored November 1942 GPW that is worthy of being an "educational" piece. I will upload some pics soon via a separate post.

Thank you Ian!
I do remember you mentioned this GPW some time ago.
there is a lot of "gold" there in your photos and your time and effort taken in cataloging these for those interested in this level of detail is to be congratulated.
The wisdom of the current custodian in retaining the "as found" patina is to be admired. I am sure MJ was most interested
cheers
Bill.

Hi All,

Glad you have enjoyed the photos- every time i look at them, i see something i missed last time! I think from memory i spent a couple of hours photographing the jeep- they were surprised when i arrived back up at the house that i had been gone so long!

The photo's i have put up are all the ones i have- with the exception of a few doubles/blurred ones.

Tom- i had noticed that felt too! The repro rubber grommet on my 42 GPW went missing a few months back- the E brake handle pushed it out, as can be seen happenning to this felt!
Gustl- glad you liked them mate!
Dex- thankyou. I thought you'd like seeing it! Bring on those photo's of your 42!
Chuck- yes mate, it is most useful for the hardware refernces! How nice it would be to see GPW 107099, or a few hundred or thousand later in the same condition to compare them!
Ronnie- happy to help mate. I was most interested to see that felt when i looked.
Sutts- agreed, she is a very valuable visual record for the future, hence i decided to find the time to post the photo's
Bill- I thought youd like them too! Yes, he was most excited!
Rod- happy to help!

Cheers,
Ian.

I wasn't expecting this much of a head rush this morning...and before my first cup of coffee. Amazing photos...amazing jeep! Wow...I don't know what else to say except that I wish it were mine! I can use the photos to make sure I get some of the smaller details on my March '43 GPW correct! Thanks for posting...and congrats to your friend!
