1943 MB 213301

Post by Beers » Sun Sep 23, 2012 6:20 am

Here's a few pics of my new project. The PO purchased it two years ago from the family who bought it at a military auction in 1951. Lots of original parts, but also lots to do to bring it back to "fighting trim" so this is where the work begins!

The frame tag and data plates match for MB 213301, DOD 2/22/43. Looks like the tub is original as well, with body #115897.

Tub is really solid, only a small bit of rot on the edges of the hat channels and tank sump. I guess it's the benefit of it being a driver all these years. Don't know why it has GPW tool box lids - maybe the motor pool did a swap?

A very colorful engine compartment!

The block is a later L-134 casting, 804380, more of an M38 engine - maybe this makes sense that the military did an engine swap in the early '50's before they sold it? The engine looks like it has been rebuilt (or someone did a lot of careful painting), and it does have a civilian head. That will get swapped out. It's also been converted to 12v.

No MB radiator, any thoughts on what that is supposed to be on?

Very nice find!! Love seeing the rust free jeeps out there in sunny Cal!! Wish I could find one half as good here in central NY's rust belt.

Even like the 'unique" paint job on the engine bay.

Congrats again, looks like a real keeper!!!

Nice grab!

This Jeep was talked about in a different post. Can you set te record straight and tell us what was mounted on the dash to the left of the steering. It's the white circular area that we're now seeing in your photos.

Thanks!

Thanks Ralph.

Here are some pics of the rear panel and interior. The original buyer put a new panel on the back; solid but a pretty rough welding job. They also covered up the seams so I'll try and dig those back out and redo. I also need to cut the trailer bar off the rear crossmember which is fairly banged up.

Thanks Dexter. As far as that circle piece mounted to the dash - I have no idea what that thing is.

Looks like it might have been home made. With the loop in the center, I'm thinking it was used to hold a spool or fasten line to. Fairly thick guage metal, and it was bolted very securely to the dash. The center was tacked to the sides, and it looks like the side was cut from a longer cylinder. Any ideas?

Thanks Chris! Not too much rust other than general surface stuff that'll clean up easy. And the engine bay is nothing that a little OD won't fix!

Congratulations on finding such a nice project. Intact frame horns, intact floor, dash plates, horn........ Very nice.

I'll be keeping an eye on your progress as my MB 210793 is a very close stablemate - estimated delivery date 11 Feb 1943.

Does yours have the same split-type seat frames in the front and air deflector under the hood?

A larger image of the data plate would be really appreciated as I need to get a repro done for mine and it would be a great help in getting the font and stamping correct.

Would also be nice to know the length of the horn trumpet and to see pictures of the rear of the horn when you get a chance please. I have 2 variations of Sparton horn and I believe the one common to the Mb had oval drain holes and raised bits on the rear ring - would be great to confirm.

Also interested in seeing your tranny cross member when you eventually lift the body. Thanks!

Good luck with the project.

Hey Dave,

They are close stablemates!

The passenger seat is a split style and I believe the driver is as well but I'll have to double check. No air deflector - unfortunately, one of the main non factory parts is the hood as it's from a GPW. Truly unfortunate as I was able to pull the U.S. Navy reg # off the hood under several coats of paint, but I can tell from the paint coats that the hood probably wasn't a "motor pool" add. I'll post some pics in the next day or so to show.

I'll post the data plate and check the horn as well. Cheers -

Thanks Paul, great stuff.

I still remember the disappointment when I stripped the paint to find the hood had been taken back to bare metal - real shame. My theory is the Navy found an army jeep hanging around and wanted to make it their own. On the flip side, the zinc chromate primer they applied has done a great job in preserving the tub.

Look forward to following your progress.

Cheers,

Dave
