You're right Ralph on the split lockwasher. Makes sense based on how other bond straps were mounted by Willys for Type 1. I dug through some older photos of this MB and found that I had no hardware left for this strap, other than the nut under the strap... I must have just put the 2nd nut on there when I stored the tub before resto. Good catch!

Have been working on a lot of small components around the engine compartment and fuel system.

Here’s a few photos of the gas tank. Overall it was in good shape, though it had a few pin holes. This is a large mouth tank, but without the indent on the front RH that came sometime later in mid to late ‘43 I believe.

Image

I used the sealer from Caswell plating. It’s one of the few mainstream tank sealers that is a two-part epoxy. It’s a real solid product, once it cures, I think you could actually remove the sheet metal and just use the sealer as the tank! :)

I spent a few more dollars to get the sealer dyed in gray, to make it easier to both coat the tank and spot any defects later (it normally is clear with a slight amber hint). I used about 70-80% in the main tank opening, rotated the tank for about 20 minutes, and then used the remainder in the fuel sending unit opening. Then kept rotating the tank, about 45-50 minutes total.

A couple photos after:

The long tank straps were in good shape overall, though the small ones had quite a bit of corrosion, but certainly still usable.

Cleaned up nice, with a strap repair kit from Ron.

Note the Pal-nut on the strap bolt, I believe this is only on MB’s (GPW’s used a lockwasher here?).

Here’s the fuel strainer bowl. Supposed to be tin-plated, but I used zinc and think it came out pretty close.

Image

Everything here is original except for the decal, strainer plug, and fuel line (all from Ron).

Here’s a photo of the flexible fuel line, both the NOS (I believe) on the right and two repro’s.

Paul,hi,
Original fuel tank, not too many of those on restos, looks well worth the effort w the Caswell sealer. You'll have a better sender unit fit at the original collar opening too.I believe virtually all of the repro tank s' collars bind at the sender arm area.
Any of the members restoring a mid-production Willys could do pretty well following your thread.Just great to see it progress as such an excellent example.
So...which flex fuel line you going to use?
Thanks for the update, been kind of waiting around for it.Well done.
Ralph

Beers, that is really coming together nicely. I admire your skills. Glad you used the original fuel tank.

Thanks guys.

Mark, I appreciate the comment - I think this is the one of the three main styles of fuel tanks (small mouth, large mouth without indent, and large mouth with indent) that there isn’t a repro made so very happy to keep this original for both that reason and that this tank was with this jeep. The Caswell coating is very hardy, this tank had both some pinholes and a couple of pretty amateur repairs but with this sealant I’m not concerned at all now.

Ralph, hopefully this sender unit will work fine. And as you certainly know, these mid-Willys had a lot of changes and I think not as much research as many of the other G-503s get, so it’s enjoyable to document some of the work here.

I’m using the middle flex fuel line, the “braided” rubber one. I’d like to use the NOS one, but even though it’s in good shape and very flexible/pliable, I’m concerned about whether it will hold up long term. I had used the one on the left before and its a nice piece, very solid, but want closer to the original look.

I’ll post some more photos later, but I’m currently working on getting the radiator sorted out. Here’s one Ralph that you’ll appreciate. I used some NOS clamps, but temporarily installed some modern hose clamps with permatex to set a good seal, a page right out of your book... :)

Thanks Ray! Been caught up in all the little parts lately, just finished the trailer socket and need to start on repairing the fenders. Will have to post some more photos soon.

With the fenders and grill temporarily installed to check spacing and alignment, I do feel like I finally have a driving vehicle again! Just went to the DMV last week to get the registration re-activated
