42 GPW Naval (More Pics)

Post by Armyspecial » Mon Oct 26, 2009 12:57 am

I have cleaned up the tub a little and remove some of Bubbas ad ons. Also fitted parts found in the glove box (front top bow, original mirror) and some Ford parts i have bought over the last couple of months, just to see exactly what i have prior to restoration.

Nice! :D Do you plan to keep it like this, no sandblasting, only minor repairs to keep the jeep good for the next years and save to drive without a ground up restoration?

Sweet looking GPW. Most parts seem to be present - and F-marked to boot!

I wish I could find a GPW in that condition.... I had my eyes on a 1942 GPW a few years ago, but it got snatched by a fellow MV enthusiast. It went to a good home, but it was 98% complete with all F-marked parts still in place. This Jeep had been imported to Sweden in 1947 and had been in the same family ever since. No factory rebuild or Bubba having butchered it.

Live well - and prosper...

There are a few complete unrestored untouched jeeps available in Europe.
They aren't cheap but worth every Euro cent.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Yes, very tempted not to restore but i think i have to be realistic. In order for me to be able to enjoy her on the road, and for her to last another 50 odd years, she will need a full restoration. I will re-use every nut and bolt possible though!

Tub markings stand for

NAVAL AUXILLARY AIR SERVICE OCEANA VA

So i have now extablished where my Jeep served during WW2. After 1952 NAAS Oceana was changed to NAS (Naval Air Service)

Also, original Army hood number found which ties in Chassis and tub manufacturing plant (Chester Pa) and DOD as either 2nd, 3rd or 4th of August 42. Image Image

I'm going to have to check this one out when I get home, but I'm not sure that a frame off complete restoration is "reasonable" to keep it road worthy. Follow me here, you can restore the mechanicals without really messing too much with the tub, so the mechanicals, which are the important part about a trip down the road are all brand new. The tub that's on top is pretty well untouched, and to further the affect, only repaint the chasis parts where it's absolutely necessary.

Then you'll have the piece of mind of knowing that the important stuff is at or near 100%, while the stuff folks see is only repaired enough to keep it all together. You may need to partially disassemble, if for instance the wiring harness needs replacing, or you have to drop the trans and t-case. I personally think it would be neat to see the "rat rod" equivalent of a Jeep restoration that is actually used and driven.

Yeah, yeah, I know, "rat rod" is a hot rodder's term and only defines the true definition of a hot rod, blah blah blah...ya'll get the idea!

When a WWII Vehicle still has its original paint job, I see no problem with leaving it the way it is. However, once it is painted some other color by a civilian, I believe it perfectly fine to return it to its original color.

Hi Richard,

Before you start work, can you please post some pics of any recessed bolts on her? I have seen the hood hinge ones you put up, but am wondering about:
Seats (pass and drivers to floor), brake inspection cover, transmision cover, water pump and sump to block?

If you could post them in this thread, or into the one i started on recessed bolts (http://www.g503.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=152941" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;), it would be great!

Cheers and thanks,
Ian.

Hi Ian,

When i get some time i will have a look for you. I can confirm that as well as the Hood Hinge, the drivers AND Passenger seats are secured with the Recessed bolts.

I will add pics etc to your post as soon as i can.
