Time line round muffler replacement?

Post by lowbonnet » Fri Jun 08, 2007 1:40 am

When was the round muffler replaced by the oval style? Was it around april or may 1942?

Does Nabholtz say anything about this?

Thanks :D

Nabholtz say that Willys changed from round to oval muffler in May
with # 143507. Page 86. From what I have understood Ford may have been some weeks later on most changes .

just saw this while paging thru the different subjects. I have GPW 20636 DOD4/30/42 - according to my dad - the muffler was original when he bought it in 49 - it is oval!

Hi Rune

Yes FORD was a bit later than MB,s with the oval muffler
EARLY ROUND start of production thru July
MIDDLE OVAL Mid July 1942 thru mid 1945
LATE DEEP-MUD Early 1945 thru out production

"Ord dept.report" AAW#2 P223 states changes as 7/20/44
Richard Grace states that the MB changover was MB# 401550(late12/44 early 45.early 1945 ma be more appopriate date

Hi guys,
My GPW is 53126 but still early production. It was aquired by the previous owner in August 1947 (it was exactly 5 years old and not rebuilt) and photos from this time clearly show it with a round muffler. I feel it is quite likely that it is the original muffler, so maybe Ford were still fitting round mufflers in early August.

Best regards

Are the hanger locations on the bottom of the tub the same for round and oval mufflers?

With many earlier jeeps here, I have never noticed a difference in mounting points so I would say they remained unchanged when the switch from round to oval was made.
