so are VEP realy just Willys in disguise .
You scoff but you may be closer to the truth than you realize. I can't speak for anyone else's VEP GPW but the only one I own is GPW 4 and in many ways it is more Willys than Ford.
Obviously parts and pieces can be changed back and forth so you never know for sure, but with a little time and experience you can often identify what is part of the original package and what has been changed.
In the case of Old Four she has Willys type headlight buckets and arms, Willys fenders, but the early Ford Grill, also Willys type wiring clips throughout. Other stuff too but can't think of it all off the top of my head. Slat grill type Ross Steering gear, etc.
All seem to have been with the truck since before the duckhunters got ahold of it. Eh who knows.

Hi Chuck. Here is a little better picture and more close up of the two piece battery tray you asked for. This is a repro tray which I installed except for the center stand which is original and still riveted to the frame. I just used the parts I needed. This is the outside view. This is a Willys slat grill but the same tray in question! Not trying to pass this off as a VEP!

This is the inside view. The only problem I had with the repro tray is that I believe the center brace is supposed to extend to the bottom of the frame instead of half way down.

Hi Joel,

Check with Ron about his GPW 166. This one came out of the Richmond plant in the last week of Feb. 42 but I feel the frame would have been shipped to Richmond in the 1st part of Feb. 42.

Hi Joel. Does GPW4 have its original grille? If so, what is the color of the primer? Also, is it F marked? I am wondering if it is similar to the one I have on MB-100063.

It does have its original grill but its been......mistreated  .
It was sandblasted and repainted before I got it and I think I sandblasted it clean last summer but will check just to be sure. The air deflectors have been mostly chopped off and the part that would have been F marked was included. The truck may still have some original paint and primer inside so I'll check that for you when I can. Find me information on another GPW with a two piece battery tray, and I'll do it for free

Ya know, I just remembered I know of a fairly early MB that came with the early GPW type grill. I just assumed it was a replacement but now you have me wondering...... :?
Its a 109XXX so it doesn't exactly tell you what you want to hear but you may be on to something just the same. Perhaps some "slat grills" didn't have slat grills at all :?: :?:
The guy is on the board so I'll see if he still has it.

This thread has wandered a bit so I must clarify, are you saying 2177 had a two piece battery tray?

Bumping my own post from a year ago.

Still looking for information on any other early GPWs that have the "two-piece" battery tray.
(Type I, Slat Grill type, however you wish to describe it).

I appreciate your help.
