What color is your steering wheel

Post by Mike Wright » Mon Mar 05, 2007 12:55 pm

OK Folks,
There has been a little discussion as to the color of the Sheller steering wheels on VEP GPW's. GPW2636 has a green Shiller on it. It looks like it's been there a long time. Since 28 FEB 42, I don't know. But if we can get a good rundown from here we may be able to find out when the change from black to green took place. Jim Gilmore in his research says (if I remember correctly late March) Please correct me if I am incorrect :!:
So, if you would post what color you have so long as it is a Sheller early style, not the metal spoke type.

I have had GPW 16904 USA 2060829 and it came to me with a green steeringwheel.
DOD 4.13.1942 That jeep was very original and my belive was that the green wheel was original. It was also a contract 1 jeep acording to Mr Jim Gilmore .

My GPW, GPW #7718 has a Green Sheller. I have no way of knowing if it is original to the jeep.

Mike and others
Maybe there is a pattern here. Some have black, some have green, and some have spoked. Could it be that differant plants used differant colors at differant times during the first/second contracts ? ? ?
SO with that do you know which plant made your GPW. #10809 was made in Dallas. Maybe that could be added to the list as well.
Cheers

Mike,

DOD April 1942. REG # 2064094.

I replaced the steering wheel in 1975 with a identical one (Sears).

I believe that if the Military had replaced it before my grandfather got the vehicle, they would have used a metal spoked model.

I know that from 1951 - 1975 it had the same wheel. Also, there is no indication that the column has ever been removed.
