Tenite

Post by Thomas Jacobson » Fri Apr 06, 2007 8:09 am

The question is are early Sheller wheels "Tenite" or hard rubber. You GPW guys should be recording that data. I believe that the hard rubber wheel is quite a bit heavier, see my web page with details on the different sheller wheels.

http://thomas.tcjnet.com/sheller.htm

I want to know, does anybody have a black Tenite (NOT hard rubber) wheel with the large 5/16 in tooling holes/plugs on the back. If anyone can show me that, we can say that there was a change to Tenite prior to the change from hard rubber to green Tenite.....

See my page for info on how to test for hard rubber (hot pin sulfur smell, and/or weight of the wheel)

Hello Group,

I don't know if this will help but according to Ford Accounting Dept. Communications for the second GPW contract - there were 16,906 Rubber, 14,463 First design Tenite, and 31,777 New style Tenite Steering Wheels used. All of these steering wheels are noted as being " purchased ".

The first Tenite was used on June 2, 1942. after 16,906 GPWs had been assembled on the second Contract.

Hi Luke,

I don't know at time. I will have to check out the steering wheel drawings the next time I am at the Ford Archives.

It was posted above that the change was in the size of the holes on the back side of the wheel but there be more to it then just that since the change also reduced the price by about 23%.
