GPW Dash Light Instrument Panel Assembly question

Post by lowbonnet » Thu Jan 25, 2018 10:11 am

I was told in the early beginning of my restoration of my script GPW that the early GPW Dash Light Instrument Panel Assembly didn't come with the extension.

Is this true or false?

I have my panel lights like this:

so, without the extension:

I can't find a single VEP pic of a Slat Grill without the extensions on the dash lamps or any of a GPW without them. I'd have to say they were there on GPWs from the git-go....

You need to look at ORIGINAL photos, not restored photos. I have a photo of a March 42 GPW showing the extensions. It is in my final draft of the GPW Restoration Standards that the MVPA will soon be publishing.

Yep, may be original, and I will probably put both of the extensions back on mine when I wire in the bulbs finally.
BUT, they are a pain in the behind. Constantly hitting and half knocking out often enough that I just removed the driver side extension in the meantime.

BTW, has anyone found a proper fitting LED replacement bulb for these 6v lights yet?

Interesting. That original photo shows they reversed the clutch and brake pedals at some point on that jeep.

What I found most interesting is the canvas TOP on that March 1942 GPW in Mike's pic....a darker color canvas but much lighter colored straps and herringbone twill edging and stitching!

It shows some usage so no idea when the pic was taken.

Not only were the pedals reversed, but a gas can carrier has been added so this one may not even have the original top!

Chuck,
If you look you can see that it hasn't got the jerry can strap retainer at the top, the top strap is fastened into the original footman loop. So it could be the original top, or an MB one.

Right on Dave....it is an early GPW but has been "modified" and the top is of an unknown origin although it is the "early" five rear strap style....boy, they are LONG straps aren't they!

It is B&W photo, but the top appears to be much darker than the OD paint is even though the jeep paint looks to have been in the field for some time...the top has a lighter edging which may be the Ford style herringbone twill or the greenish Willys style leatherette (gimp) edging.

There is something on tow in the photo...so maybe this is an Aberdeen vehicle or one sent to colleges or universities or something? I believe I heard something like that????

I think I see 6 straps on the rear.

Hello,

That picture of the "42" Jeep looks a little odd, as it looks like it has been through a motor pool refit/modification already.
The pedals are reversed up, the rear tire looks like it has 10,000 miles of road wear on it, a gas can holder has already been retrofitted to it over the rear USA number location. The top looks like it was made out of "blue denim" like the original fatigues in WW2 were :D .
The top "looks" like it has a notch out for the gas can bracket, but appears situated over the spare tire holder,
... is that top inside out and mounted backwards ??

The steering wheel looks like shiny black, the windshield appears to have some sort of tubular thing mounted on the lower right inner windshield.
The Firestone tires look like they have no stem protectors, and...... does that circular logo on the side say "combat"
like my Firestone half track wheel ?

It certainly tis possible that in this particular jeep the extensions were original or added like other features were added.

Regardless, it is a very interesting picture, thanks for posting it !!!

Best Regards,

Ray

Well...it isn't turned inside out...as you can see, the rear straps are, as they should be, sewn to the outside of the rear panel. While the stitching is there on the rear panel....no strengthening straps are visible around the rear window which means they are on the INSIDE and the top is mounted as it should be. Looks like she's wearing "Firestones" and pulling some type of farm implement.

Chuck, I agree the trim is a different shade of olive drab, but without knowing more about the film used and any filters, it is tough to say conclusively much about perceived color differences in old photos. Different films and filters would react to things differently, see this old thread. http://www.g503.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=206725

Off hand it looks like OD 3 on the trim and OD 7 on the rest of the top, but who knows. I agree it looks like it has been through some mods too.

Forgot to say, if this is the same photo I've seen, it's pulling a little trailer loaded with sandbags (for ballast?) and appears to be at an air field.
