Pre August 42 Radiator cap
Hi all,
Can anyone share with me what type of radiator cap was on a GPW prior to the creation of this Ford Factory drawing? I see that the drawing was started/completed on 8-28-42,
My questions then is, what type of cap was fitted to a GPW before the caps drawn on this factory drawing?
https://www.thehenryford.org/collection ... ct/430198/
Thanks,
Ian.

Some civilian Ford Trucks of the 40's shared the 4# cap as found on the GPW.

Thanks mate.
Food for thought. I do need to see if the 1st contract manual has anything in it in the way of a parts number- it would be a starting point!

Re: Pre August 42 Radiator cap
Yes, I remember either Lawrence Nabholtz or Lloyd White stating it was the only GPW part number in the Ford catalogue to continue on postwar. The drawing Ian refers to is last dated 5 Jan 1946.
Ian,
check out the box on bottom left of the drawing, Rev A1 & A3
Then there is the GPW-8100-A2. I would like to know what changes there were to bring it to the A3 Revision?

Re: Pre August 42 Radiator cap
Interesting topic. I would be nice to know all the change over dates.
I have an original take off F marked cap I removed from a Pe-95.
Mine looks just like the picture of the A2 one however, mine does not have the 3.5-4 lbs or the GPW part number.
I was planning to use it on my 45 GPW. Has anyone else observed the verson I have?

Re: Pre August 42 Radiator cap
Here is the A version right out of the box....note that the GASKET is not attached to the sealing mechanism of the cap...it is installed in the neck of the radiator. Perhaps the other one had the gasket attached to the cap?
EDIT:....I like this one for early jeeps but without the gasket....fuggeddabboudditt.....display only!

Re: Pre August 42 Radiator cap
I was searching the forums and found an old thread about radiator caps. Not sure if it answers the OP question but it does contain a little bit more info on the subject.

Re: Pre August 42 Radiator cap
Realize this is an old thread, but I just found it as I was searching for info on my old GPW radiator cap. I have one just like bart1015 pictures, with the ears and the F stamp, but without the part number, etc. My jeep is an early Ford, DOD 4/24/42.
Bart1015 - did you have any luck using this cap? Mine had just the remains of a fiber/cork gasket that was no good anymore. Did you find a way to put yours back to use? I'd love to use mine if I can, as I am presently having the original radiator restored.

Re: Pre August 42 Radiator cap
I believe this same Cap was also installed on postwar 40's FORD Cars and Light Trucks.

Re: Pre August 42 Radiator cap
My cap has no gasket left on it and it doesn't look like it ever had one bonded to it. There was no gasket on it when I removed it from the PE-95.seabee147 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 05, 2019 11:58 amRealize this is an old thread, but I just found it as I was searching for info on my old GPW radiator cap. I have a March 42 and a June 45 GPW and I have 3 different F marked caps. Knowing the changeover dates would awesome.

Re: Pre August 42 Radiator cap
I believe that Joel is onto the right direction with his observance about the Ford cap possibly being for a 1940s vehicle. Unless we open a previously sealed Ford box with a GPW or GPA or other Ford initial use numbered designation on it, any cap we come across that has "ears" or an "F" on it that is not identified, can not be assumed to have even been part of a GPW! I don't know what cap is on the GTB/Burma Jeep and on the Ford 1 1/2 ton truck or the Ford Staff cars or pre-war civilian vehicles so for me....I would have to agree with the possibilities that Joel is indicating or hinting may be a part of the identification possibilities.

Oh boy, here we go. No answer or photo posted, just a manual reference that has NOTHING TO DO WITH A G-503 and probably less than 2% of G-503 owners even have.

Re: Pre August 42 Radiator cap
Nothing to do with a G-503? GPW 8100A is a GPW Radiator cap for all GPW' and is same as WILLYS A-1215. The above is only a part of the story.
SNL G-658 is the Ford Master Parts List.
SNL G-658, nice book to have. And then there is the GPW Drawing for GPW 5100A, You must have a friend that has done research at the Ford Archives.

Re: Pre August 42 Radiator cap
Chuck,
I do agree with you. The cap with the ears originally came off a PE-95 with an all Ford engine. The complete generator had 8 total hours on it when I bought it. Yes, the hour gauge works (just for the guys who may ask).
Who knows, the cap could have been a replacement at some point that just happened to be a Ford marked cap. I have no proof either way.
Ben Dover, I know you enjoy telling people what book to look in, but I am not going to buy a book right now just to look up info on a radiator cap. It sure would be nice if you would post some pictures and provide some answers that would actually help.
