Gpw engine 5235 originally green
I have only uncovered green on my block and bell housing and no grey. My bell housing is f marked but is missing a 1 or 2 but has no indent like it is supposed to have. The bolts on the oil pan where half f marked and half tr marked. The oil pump was gpw marked. I know that these parts where replaced at some time the head was replaced to a ford 2, the intake manifold was ford but the later style, water pump willys, oil dipstick is type II, later distributor, later cross over tube, later fuel pump, willys trans and transfer case.

An engine made in the Ford engine plant would be painted grey as would the b'house and T84 and sent to each factory as a unit. There, they were installed into OD jeep frames with mostly OD painted items with the exception of some black components under the hood.
As you surmise, an engine that exhibits parts from other time frames or from MBs would have been a rebuild and they would have used OD and not had the grey the Ford plant was using to paint the assemblies as noted in the ppg above.
So...technically it wasn't "originally green", but as from the rebuild facility it was green....does that make sense?
Were the pistons marked "STD" or did they indicate it was bored out and was there a rebuild tag riveted to the block or evidence of on having been there at some point in time?

Yes the motor has been rebuilt at least one time as the pistons are larger. It still has the yellow armored stars which where supposedly gone after July 42. It had never gotten a white star or repaint besides a blue color post war. You would think that a machine shop wouldn't strip an engine down completely for a repaint. If they did you would think that they would repaint it the color that came off of it or sprayed over the grey but not strip it down. The bell housing is probably the original one and the clutch has all f marked bolts on it. There appears to be no grey behind the clutch also

If you can't find an engine rebuild tag, the oversize pistons are a part of the equation...they may have also ground the crank mains and rod journals and replaced the valve train....at some places I think that might mean stripping the block down to a bare-block situation and if for some reason the original GREY paint was stained or otherwise worn or degraded then stripping it and eventually repainting it might be what happened with it.
There is still no way to tell if that was done while the jeep was in service or in a post war machine shop...I tend to think the latter since the jeep paint job appears to be "original". A good look at the T84 and T/C to check if they are Ford or not and what color they are may add something to the identification process....and if they have rebuild tags riveted to them.

Re: Gpw engine 5235 originally green
I originally thought 13551 originally had an OD engine. I found a couple grey spots under the very old OD on the valve cover and elsewhere. I also found the remnants of OD on the oil filter and oil line fittings as though everything was painted together after reassembly. What I couldn't figure out is why. The pistons are not oversized.

Sorry, but GPW motor # 5235 was not "originally" green.
