Yes it can be costly but, I already spent the 35 bones on the nickel rod to fix a transmission case on the GTB.

Re: VEP GPW Differences from other GPWs
I was reading on Jeep Draw that the AC air cleaners were all used up around Mar 42, and that would have been different at each plant. Given the difficulty in finding an AC and the price of the repros, I decided to purchase TwoCar's decal Oakes and will go with that for my late Mar 42 GPW that will be in the works later. Here are some images of the cleaner., and the verbiage from JD
"There were 8000 AC pancake air cleaners to be used on the first contract production and at the end of the day on March 23, 1942 7937 GPW's had been built. Both figures are from Ford Archives of GPW production / contract records. Each plant should/could have run out of the pancake air cleaner at different times. The records of when the change happened at each plant may or may not ever be found. (Tom- '09)
Followed By:- With Decal Instructions March 1942 - Mid (June or July) 1942"

Re: VEP GPW Differences from other GPWs
If its any use my April 42 has the bellhousing with no holes - and it doesn't look grey to me.
Its got an ear missing and missing a big piece where a clutch has made a break for freedom.
That was dropped off this morning to be repaired.

They look like this. I can't tell if that's an "F" marked bolt but it is drilled for a wire, which seems odd. That's a bent washer, sorry I didn't lean far enough over. This one is above the transmission crossmember mount, I don't know where the others were or how many were used. This is from GPW 24??? I think. I'll check on that and edit this.

2 were used, that location. They were NOT F marked, at least none I've seen or heard of were.JAB wrote: ↑Fri Oct 13, 2017 2:40 pmThey look like this. True. I will take a picture of mine when I get my new "replacement" phone.

Re: VEP GPW Differences from other GPWs
These bolts saw use in the 30's on Ford trucks. It is a tapered bolt, with around a 1/2" shoulder and around 3/8" threads. They may be availible in the restoration aftermarket, though I have not looked.
The earlier useage may help explain why Ford did it and WO didn't.

Re: VEP GPW Differences from other GPWs
Yeah, because the truck cab moves independently from the bed. This helped with the torque on the cab. It doesn't seem to make sense on the jeep because the front and back are securely bolted down and the tub is one piece. Who knows.

Re: VEP GPW Differences from other GPWs
Well there I was happily starting to repair my early small hole drivers seat and I find the stone guard chewed up and very thin. I decided I'd get a new one and just replace it. Knowing how everyone says that ford used the long plate with out the piece of filler wood, i ordered the long one and it duly arrived. Turns out I should have gonr for the short one with the wood spacer! Has any other VEP owner found their drivers seat with small opening to have a short guard with wood filler?
Thinking about it, what combination do all the VEP owners have? I suspect there maybe 3 versions, Small mouth with Short guard. Small mouth with long guard and then large mouth with long guard. Any thoughts or evidence?

Re: VEP GPW Differences from other GPWs
How long was the guard in inches? I can measure mine and post it if that will help.

What will help alot too is if you can share what plant your jeep was manufactured at.kmccarthy16 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 25, 2018 10:56 amMy jeep has the AC pancake air cleaner

Given there were (5?) plants running, supplies of different parts were delivered to (timing wise) and used up at different rates.
Thanks,
Ian.

1871 was manufactured in Dallas and has the original pancake oil bath air filter.
