Re: VEP GPW Differences from other GPWs
Here are some F marked bolts found on 6008.
Foot rest bolts
Wind shield bolts
Fender to frame bolts
Some F bolts on rear panel for spare wheel bracket but this had been moved so may not be original
The bolts for the axle bump stops (f script firestone marked with GPW Pt no.) were plain head as were the body hold down bolts (with springs). The master cylinder bolts and other bracket bolts were also plain but the battery splash shield bolts were TR20 marked and as the shield had no F script, I suspect it to be Willys and assume fitted at Midland (also OD paint applied with shield already in place as yellow phos primer underneath mounting). Steering box was M38 but heat shield was original GPW, all bolts were plain head. As far as I recall, the other bolts were a random mix of Willys type bolts and post war.
I did find some other script bolts which had obviously been removed from other parts of the jeep or other GPWs and used else where. For example 2 F script bolts were used to instal a door hinge on the rear floor where the pedestal would fit. I have no idea why. Oh and I found one jammed into the glove box.

Re: VEP GPW Differences from other GPWs
This seems to be a piece of the mystery, and as I am not as well GPW-read as others I have a few questions: Who primed the frame? Was it Midland, and if so were they known to use YO primer? Or did Ford prime it after receiving from Midland? This seems to be a telling point.m3bobby wrote:... Re: VEP GPW Differences from other GPWs
OUTSTANDING thread! Thanks for starting it!
The Restoration Guide is coming along very well! In @ 1 month it will be going out for vetting then to the MVPA for final and publication. AS a side bar, The MVPA has stopped selling the old guide as so much new information has come to light in recent years.
Keep up this thread! I'm finding useful intel here!
Thanks
Mike

6008 axle bump stop had heads on bottom, nuts on top, plain bolts, Willys frame. Fronts bolt into captive nuts on frame so perhaps that is why the rears are orientated the same way. Does the Ford frame have the same captive nuts for the front bump stop?

Regarding the discussion of Green vs Black Sheller steering wheels, the following list from the G indicates that both colors were used throughout the production of the VEP.

Re: VEP GPW Differences from other GPWs
Early dipstick. Arrived yesterday. The tube is OEM and the dipstick/cap is NOS. I need to clean them both up and will psot some images. I believe the tube is unmarked, but I should find some marks on the tube including an F. I believe the clamp is not original at it appears to be thin sheet metal, but I am unsure.

The clamp looks original to me. Clean it and let us know. compare it to others, I don't believe the clamp changed.
