I AM STARTING MY RESTORATION AND I HAVE DOUBTS. HELP PLEASE.

Post by Bertu » Mon Aug 29, 2016 2:27 am

I am starting in one month the restoration of my GPW. The chassis, engine and globes box number is: GPW 237664*, body number 156031, and hood number 20588772 and I have a few questions. May be anyone can help me… This are the questions:

How can I protect the chassis, engine and body number…? Any product?

Is is necessary to do anything before I will start the restoration? I mean take pictures of any special parts?

What should be the original color to use in the restoration? GPW 44

Is there any way to find where the car has been??? I mean if it was in Europe for the WW2? And the seller told me that the car was in a military base in Carolina… How can I find info?

According with this model and year, what numbers/letters, etc it is suppose that I can find removing the old painting?? At this moment I only have find the hood number....

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR HELP IN ADVANCE!!!

Welcome to the forum!

First and foremost, make as many photos as you can before you do anything to the jeep, and I do mean from every part, angle and detail. As many as you can because these will be a huge help during the rest of the restoration process. Also make photos of every step you take during restoration.

Second, from your questions I understand this is a new subject for you. Take your time to study the wealth of information here on the forum, and get (reprints) of the various Technical Manuals (TM), Parts Lists and the various other books on the subject that are available. In fact, I think it's best you don't start work on your GPW until you have at least some basic understanding about the subject. Depending on the sort of restoration you want to do there are lots of details to sort out. Those manuals and your printer will become your best friends over the coming time.

You can begin by starting your own restoration topic here on the forum where you can post photos of your jeep and ask questions along the way. Members can then follow your progress and answer questions and give advice. Don't throw any part you take off the jeep out until you're certain it's not original or a period-original modification. Even parts that can't be rescued can serve as pattern or example to find/make a replacement.

In short, don't jump into this too fast and take your time to make proper preparations. It's part of the fun and will pay for itself by avoiding possible mistakes and errors.

Good luck! :D

Hi,
I am restauring GPW #238336, dod (estimated) 5th or 6th december 1944, pretty close!
My body is #155234.

If you post pictures of the serial stamping of the frame, I am sure Tom W. could tell you wich plant she came from, and maybe more.
Your hood number is a very nice thing to find, I'm jealous!
With matching engine, plates, frame, and (to me) original reg. number and body you have all you can dream of to begin with!

Post a lot of pictures, we'd all enjoy it, and without any doubt give you good advices on what's wrong or right, what will need the most work, and so on!

Thanks a lot David and Fabrizio!!!

Fabrizio I am attaching some pictures, here below and in 3 next posts after this.... The plate in my gloves box plates only have 12-44. How do you know that your DOD is 5th-6th...? :P

One more question... I read that the blue engine was used only for a few 42 GPW. Is that right? What color must I use in mine GPW 44?

I am attaching the pictures in next post.

Thanks again.

Very nice!
Tom W (from this board, a real gpw guru) did estimate my date of delivery using his extensive database and studies.
From the font used to stamp the frame, he can tell you which plant it was.
From the shape of your "6" (same as mine) I think it's Dallas, TX.
So our GPWs might have been on the same parking lot, and made maybe one, or two days apart!
He also estimated my hood number "on the high 2058xxxx or low 2059xxxx", wich confirms, I think, both the quality of his database, and the originality of your number!
Mine doesn't have the glovebox plates........but I should get the original back very soon....unbelievable but true!

If you don't mind I'll be asking you a lot of details about what's on your Jeep, as I think it should be 100% identical to mine from the factory!

Yes please ask me what you need... I already took 606 pictures only from the exterior of the GPW.... (it is not a joke... :D )
I read somewhere that for the hood number we have it comes from Richmond Factory. Let me try to fond the info for you.......

Here you can see the years according to the chassis number:
http://www.1942gpw.com/a-3-G503_1942_Fo ... story.aspx

Here you can see that the GPW contract number W-374-ORD-2862 were made in Richmond:
http://www.jeepdraw.com/WIKI_PURPOSE_SECTION.htm

And here from contract number: the you can see the Jeeps Assembled at Richmond under Ordnance Contracts by contract no. and date of contract:
http://fordmotorhistory.com/factories/r ... _jeeps.php

May be I am wrong...¿? Perhaps Tom can confirm what I am telling...¿?

If you need you can write me directly to my email: ac@cap-ras.com

Hi,
In your second link look at 1, table 2:
You'll see that contract W-374-ORD-2862 was actually produced by all Ford plants except one!

It looks amazing!
It looks like you have the rare Ford blackout guard.
Is the black-out bucket (not the bulb-black steel face) Ford, or another brand?
