VEP #4312 - Restoration Thread
Now that my 44 GPW restoration is complete, my idle hands are itching to start a new project. Introducing VEP # 4312 with a DoD 03/02/1942. Frame and glove box numbers matching, but it has an early MB engine (#216211). My plan is to pull the MB engine and use a replacement GPW engine from a PE-95 generator I own. More information on the GPW replacement engine can be found on this link -- > viewtopic.php?f=4&t=269943) It will be somewhat correct. I plan to use this thread to document my restoration, show lessons learned to the next persons restoring a GPW and to pick your brains for help. This will probably be a several year restoration and cost twice as much as I estimated. Thanks for looking and enjoy the show.

Thank you!
Here is my first question. The drive train looks original and has a skinny rear driveshaft. When I look at #3373, it has a fat rear drive shaft. Are both correct or has one of them been replaced with the incorrect driveshaft?

As far as I know the fat shaft is incorrect. It should be a thin shaft with a GP part number.

Re: VEP #4312 - Restoration Thread
Good find, very nice looking early GPW, I noticed the white paint, I have script GPW #12375, 4/42 and it also is painted white after the OD as this one. I always wondered why it was white when it seems other colors were more popular back then. It was as this one, inside grill, light brackets, dash etc. , but I guess as the saying goes, different strokes for different folks.

m3bobby and sunnyboy,
Thanks for the information! I was hoping that the skinny driveshaft was correct. I'll look for the part number once I remove it and can clean it up.
I think I found 4 colors on it; OD, black, white and brown, but not sure if the brown and black are the same color just weathered differently. Whomever painted it used a big brush and didn't stay in the lines!

Re: VEP #4312 - Restoration Thread
GPW 6008 had a black primer on the frame with a very light green top coat. It then appears to have had OD painted over that before the body was bolted down. After the body was fitted it had another coat of OD followed by a black, grey and orange mess which I can only describe as bubbas urban camo. The body had never been removed.

Wow...now that is interesting. I wonder what the reason/purpose was for that painting technique and color scheme.

Re: VEP #4312 - Restoration Thread
I know that I’m going to make some folks upset with the following post and I apologize to them in advance, but I had to do it. With that being said, I pulled the GPW engine from the PE-95 generator.

One of the thermostat housing bolts broke off while trying to remove it. Add that to the list of things to fix.

Re: VEP #4312 - Restoration Thread
I found some nice F marked parts (carb air horn and the rear engine block plate) and was lucky enough to pull an early Houde oil bath air cleaner from the generator as well. I think it’s correct for this build and will need some tweaking, but will work nicely. You can follow the post about it here viewtopic.php?f=4&t=275483

Looks like a great start, certainly better than what I have to work with (but that MB engine is a huge boost). Can't wait to see how it turns out.

Hello All.
Quick question. Would my VEP have an F script pintle hook and eye bolts? I've looked around for an answer and can't find one.
Thanks!
