Original-Waterpump Pulley Alignment...

Post by 1942ford » Thu May 07, 2015 6:57 am

Hi guys,

Can anyone tell me if there are any differences between the size (length) of genuine wartime Ford-GPW water pumps please? :|

I ask, as I've just bought two identical NOS 6v Dynamo's - one each for my June '42 GPW and one for Sam's July '45 GPW restorations...which has thrown up an issue...Sam's fits fine, but my dynamo gets touched by the fan-blades...after much head-scratching and measuring, it appears that my genuine-Ford water-pump & pulley sits slightly closer to the block than Sam's modern replacement, causing my fan-belt to be 'bent' forward by about it's own width at the dynamo...and which causes my fan-blades to just touch the dynamo pulley...(its an original NOS 'Ford' fan, too)

Unfortunately I don't know how to post photo's on the forum (unless anyone can help me please?) as a picture's worth a thousand words! :D

Regards - Guy.

Possible WC Generator pulley. They appear identical until the generator is installed and the pulley alignment is noticed. WC and G-503 share same Auto Lite Generators.

Hi Ben,

Thanks for your reply sir!

I suspected that myself, but I've closely measured both Dynamo's and their identical...yet its only mine that touches the fan blades - However, Sam's has a modern water-pump & pulley fitted, mine is a rebuilt wartime Ford original with a wartime Ford pulley...

The only other difference being that mine has a wartime cast crankshaft-pulley, whilst Sam's has a later-war pressed pulley - we both have the same fan-belts fitted too!

As far as I can see/tell, it must be a water-pump/pulley issue???

MB/GPW and 4 Cyl. CJ-2A thru CJ-5 water pumps interchange and their pulleys are in same relative position.

Is it possable that the Generator mounting bracket is incorrect and has the generator mounted too far foward. Seems that i remember of later willys engines using diff. brackets. Just a thought.

The front engine plate determines the location of the generator on 4 Cyl Jeeps. MB/GPW has an approximately longer mounting bracket, CJ has an approximately 1" shorter mounting bracket. MB/GPW generator is longer than CJ..
Hoy long from the front face of the generator to the front edge of the pulley groove on both generators?

Guy,

Photos are worth a thousand words as the saying goes.. If you have any way to snap a few pictures, it will probably give one of us enough to identify the problem.

If your waterpump pully is original and installed properly, there should be no problem there. That leaves the generator as the primary suspect. How is the alignment at the crank, and do you have a single or double groove pully fitted?

1) wrong genny
2) wrong pulley on generator: post the part number cast into the front for verification
3) wrong pulley on water pump: I've never heard of that but it is possible I guess
4) pulley on pump seated too DEEP
5) wrong fan or fan mounted BACKWARDS

something is OK on one set up and WRONG on the other jeep....
