Re: VVEP Stewart Warner Speedo
Nah...no sweat...sometimes the additional posts get the eye of someone and they remember something. We don't have anything definitifve, just a few owners who have found that style in VVEP GPWs (OK, under 1,000 I guess) and Sean's article which has nothing in it to tell us how he arrived at that statement there were some of this style used EARLY in GPWs.
You'd think with all the GPWs on the Serial Number List on G503 under GPW-1000 that someone might see this or contact an owner to find out what kind of gauges ( SW paIntcan or SW standard) or speedo (SW/KS/Autolite/Motometer/Long needle/Counterbalanced needle) their project originally CAME with.
I know it isn't a guarantee of what the factory installed but in some instances these jeeps are found fairly complete and the info would be of some interest in figuring out what those first GPWs came with.

Right here in this very thread, as a matter of fact. You folks are watching "history" be made.Michael O. wrote:I think one of the best ways to determine a "VVEP" (I think there's been a new term invented here)

These are found with a WWII date code on them so they were used.....
Mine is dated "L11"....or Nov. 1943. Standard looking rear of the case and a BRASS bezel!

Re: VVEP Stewart Warner Speedo
Hello,
6 years later
In the Jeepdraw section on speedometers originally written by Sean Elliot and later regenerated by Ron one can find that the Very Early GPW speedometer was a Stewart Warner with a dial plate in which the ticks extend to the border and with odometer rolls that have a white background (4000096)
The picture is from Chuck Lutz and I hope I can reuse it:
From the previous posts in this thread I understand that this kind of speedometer was used only in the VVEP GPW's with serial numbers lower than 1000.
Very soon (feb mar 1942?) a more classic Stewart Warner speedometer was used (403261):
When looking ar a possible restoration project of a 4000096 I did think that components of the 403261 could be used and that is was only a matter of using the reset shaft and the bezel of the 4000096.
Looking closer at the pictures however I noticed that the odometer roll windows were different, something that was confirmed by importing both dial plates into Coreldraw:
Red is the (used in VVEP GPW's) 4000096 and blue the 403261.
I do not have a 4000096 in my collection, and I do not have an original VVEP GPW, so I can not say for sure but normally the above means that also the frames of both speedometers would be different making it even more difficult to restore, unless one has a good 4000096 to start with.
Details I know but ... hey, I wanted to a archeologist long time ago
Greetings
Hans

Re: VVEP Stewart Warner Speedo
Try looking at TM 9-816, 4 to 5-Ton 4x4 Tractor Truck (Autocar Model U-7144T)
Again, the Stewart Warner 590X was not used in GPW production. It would have been a suitable replacement speedometer available in the supply system, however.
