Should i have a glove box return-spring?

Post by 1942ford » Sat Feb 21, 2015 1:14 am

Hi guys,

A simple question that I just can't find an answer too!...should my late-June built script, have a glove box return spring please???

I think I remember reading somewhere, that although later scripts still have the pressing and cut-out for one - the spring itself wasn't actually fitted...

Can any of you learned-folk put me right please?

Kind Regards - Guy. :)

Hi Guy,
I have a very late script, from August, and I had researched that same question. My belief is that it should have the indent and the spring. But I'm not 100% sure, so I'd be interested in responses.

I can not directly answer your questions about the glove box door spring at this time for '42 GPWs.
According to Ford assembly records in very early '44 the glove box door spring was only used in the assembly process with the spring being removed before final assembly.

Until Tom runs across something definitive its's kind of up in the air....I myself chose to use the glove box door spring on my 4/42 GPW.
1) The door with original data plates on it has the indent so it either SHOULD have the spring or they eliminated the spring prior to that but failed to change the design of the door and get rid of the notch for it.
2) The door no longer rattled once I installed the spring and it has the added benefit of holding the door OPEN as well as keeping it snug when shut.

I had (probably still have) the spring for 12078 in a box of parts somewhere.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the input gents - I almost feel honoured to have so many noble gee members advising me! :D

I seem to recall reading in the past though, that the spring was used on all the first-contract GPW's - but that it was gradually phased-out during the second contract?...if so, I presume that was simply to use up the existing stocks?...as the second contract also included many non-script tubs, I feel that it's probably worth putting the spring on - I could always remove it, if it later turns out that my June built tub shouldn't have it, I suppose! :-)

It'd still be nice to know for sure though...

Guy. :-)

PS - I wonder why Ford felt the need to hold the glovebox door open during production...maybe it was to allow access to the fuel-filter mounting holes or something?

Hi Guy,
I can't help with any definitive answer but my early August '42 GPW didn't have a spring when I got it but the wear where one had been was clearly visible. Take from that what you will !!

Hi Alasdair and all! :-)

Following the number of 'votes' for having the spring, I gonna go with having one...if its later proved I shouldn't have one, I can always remove it I suppose!

Thanks for your help everyone...

Kind Regards,

Guy. :-)

Folks, on the same line of question, can someone confirm the date that the keyed glove box lock was deleted? Did all 1st contract GPWs have a keyed lock?
