GPW SN? USA 20696??

Post by Ian Fawbert » Sun Nov 30, 2014 2:17 am

Hello all,

I bought this photo the other day on ebay. I believe it is of a VEP or close to 1st/2nd contract GPW. It appears to be USA 20696XX, on a GPW frame. (EDIT: I originally thought it was 20698XX but after seeing Toms comments below, I have come back to edit it for future readers).

Just sharing as i am sure it would be of interest to others on this forum. I have cropped it, but the remainder of the photo is just trees. If anyone wants to have a go playing with the photo to sharpen it up, let me know and i will email it to you to try and then i/you can repost it here.

I have a few more on the way of 1st/2nd contract GPW's and will share them when they arrive too.

Cheers,
Ian.

Hi Ian,

Great photo!

Only problem that I see is that I have not yet found any 20698xx registration numbers being used by Ford on a GPW. Others may have better records than I.

Hi Tom,

I did wonder about the 9 in the number when i saw it last night being high.

What would a 20698? number be allocated to? Do you think that the number could be a willys number on a GPW? I know a lot of hypotheticals can be put in place here, but i am just wondering about the number and what it might have been for then if not GPW.

Unfortunately there are no details on the photo to assist in dating it- whether war time or not.

Thoughts warmly welcome!

Cheers,
Ian.

Hi Ian,

The 2069 can be OK but the 20698 is a problem looking at the data that I have gathered over the years.

I see black steering wheel, no BODL, looks like round reflector on the left rear side, rubber hood blocks, and a flat top grill which all point to a 1st contract GPW with a 7 digit hood number. The 1st GPW contract records that I have seen only goes up to hood number 2069777 ( Chester ).

Perhaps someone else can add some additional data with references.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the clarrification of the numbers.

Just wondering, could it be 20696? Would that be better?- i cant think what other number it could be other than 6 or 8.

I agree with you re the features making it a 1st contract GPW, hence i was interested in buying it to look more closely.

I dont know if its just my eyes, but does the bumper have straight ends too?

Hi Ian,

Most likely the last visible digit is a 6 as a factory 6 would have a straight side like the 0 and 9. A number of 20696xx would be a Chester GPW from the very end of March or very early April, '42. The first 6 is showing a rounded side but now re-looking I believe that is a reflection or camera issue.

The bumper is hard to say - may be just the camera angle.
