Hi Phil,

The first production line GPW was built at the Dearborn, Mi. assembly plant. The first about 1500 units ( not serial numbers ) were assembly there before the other branch assembly plants got their lines started.

Nice jeep, know the feeling - I bought mine in from Texas 8 or 9 years ago. Just getting ready to take it to Normandy for the 70th.

As per Guy, happy to help on restoration details - how far do you want to go? Motorpool or factory. I tried to do factory.

If you need an original Ford cast tow hitch, I have a spare i would sell. I also have a spare F marked cylinder head.

Ok so the shade of Olive drab i chose was BS198. It looks very green, a friend has mentioned this is similar in colour to the US marine jeeps for the Pacific, also mine is on 6.50x16 tyres which I believe the US marines used too. Can any one suggest a set of markings I can add to this vehicle to make it a US marine vehicle from the pacific war?

Take a look at some of these pictures. They show Navy Jeeps with NO markings.

I just came across a very interesting online collection of combat pics by Dale Rooks, a little-known (and little-published) combat photographer in WWII.

I'm happy to say I am the new owner of GPW 11084. She is now in Dorset, England and this is how she looks today. There's still plenty of work to do & lots for me to learn but I must say I'm loving every minute of it! :)

One unusual thing about this early GPW is a bell fitted beneath the driver's floor with what looks like footswitch inside the footwell. It looks well done, not 'bubba built'. The makers mark can be clearly seen. Has anyone come across this before? I'm wondering if it points to this jeep previously being used by a military police, medical or fire unit?

Hey steve, don't know what yer big ball is but i am afraid it isn't a standard VEP fitting. also, icant read your number in the picture - what is it?

Thanks for your response awddouglas. I agree the bell housing isn't standard, I was just wondering if it gives some indication of the vehicles past life. The number is the chassis number *11084*. :)

Congrats on buying her fella - she looks an awful-lot better now sir!

Unfortunately, I can't offer any ideas about your bell either (other than it looks very 'period' to WW2) but like I offered to the previous owner (who never bothered to reply!) - if I can be of any help or advice, please feel free to get in-touch...I own a Script GPW myself, along with a June '43 MB and I'm currently restoring a very late (June '45) GPW too :-)

A glutton for punishment - I think you must be with all that on your plate!

Questions, lots.... but to begin with is the foot starter switch connecte directly to the ammeter or via the filterette? The original switch has long since been removed and various reference sources offer differing advice. Also would a GPW canvas cover be marked as Ford or is this a modern reproduction thing?

The foot starter button (assuming you mean the one in the floor on the trans hump) is connected by the number 0 (ie large) cables, between the battery and the post on the starter. stepping on the button closes the circuit allowing battery power to flow through and spin the starter.

[batt. +] ----- [foot starter]-------[starter post]
[batt -]------[frame ground point]

The starter body is connected by the L bracket to the block. These connections not only to support the back of the starter, but to provide ground between the starter body and the engine block, and therfore should be sparkly clean to allow grounding or earthing.

The dash-mounted key/toggle switch connects to the ammeter.

[batt.]----------[ammeter]----------[key/toggle switch]----------[coil] {I think}

BTW, your GPW is early enough that from the factory it was likely equipped with an H700 keyed ignition switch.

Hi Luke. Yes she does have H700 ignition with original key. Thanks for the info, especially the clean L bracket tip....
poor grounding = hard starting!

Should 11084 have a 'tombstone' type blackout light guard? The wing has holes (that have since been filled) that match this type. Cheers. Steve.

A tombstone would have been installed by the unit, not the factory.
