GPW Chassis rail style

Post by KC » Sun Sep 08, 2013 8:13 am

I have a 1942 script with the front chassis rails that are square into the bumper and not angled as usually seen on gpws. The front frame horns have never been taken off.
Can the members tell me is this what is referred as a Murray frame ?
Does anybody have pictures of the Murray frame to compare
Thanks for any help.
Ken

It would help a ton if u could post some pics of your frame. I am by no means anything close to a g-expert, buti have learned from my own g questions that a picture is truly worth a thousand words. There are a ton of great guys on here that are more than willing to help. Good luck with your project

Hi KC,

ALL GPWs with a C chanel front cross member have Murray made frames. You just have a first type version under your GPW.

Hi Tom,
Thank you for your reply and information, as every show I go to I look at the other GPWs and have never seen another
With the same chassis rail. Would you know the numbers made and were they from one factory ?
Would you also be kind enough to confirm the factory that built this GPW, it's chassis number is 23885
Thanks again

Hi Ken,

nice to here from other GPW owners with this type of frame.
I found the same style of frame under my VEP GPW. Now the frame is disasembled, welded at all rusted sections and ready for sandblasting.
But there is a little problem, the frame was bubba modified at the front section. About 0.5 inch were cut off at the front ends and I don't know the exact length of it. http://www.fototime.com/users/Dirk.Wald ... -175/frame
You wrote that your gussets are complete. Would you be so kind to help me and measure out the lenghth from the end of the hole to the front end.
With this help it is possible to reconstruct it like the original.

Hi Dirk,
Great to hear from another owner with the same chassis. The measurement you need is 42mm, do you know what factory your jeep came from ?
Keep us updated on your progress, if you need anymore details just let me know.

Ken,

many thanks for your help - great :D .
So the frame rail ends at front the bumper !
Up to now I haven't asked Tom W. for this information, but data plate says "gross weight 2288" and "DOD 4-2-42".
Will send new informations about process of restoring.

Hi Dirk,

The weight and DoD only narrows the assembly plant choice to two from five. Can you PM me with all the stamped data on the serial number plate ?
