Found GPW Engine 2263 - Seeking Info

Post by jodync » Fri Jun 28, 2013 7:36 pm

Hello everyone, I found what I believe is GPW engine #2263. Obviously, this is an early block. I don't know too much about engines this early, so I was wondering if it was something special. A guy is selling a few parts jeeps, and I discovered this in the mix. I'm on the fence on whether to purchase the lot, but this might be a gem. I'm still pretty new to the hobby, but I'm eager to learn. Any expert opinions are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi mate,

Good find! My vote, purchase it!

There will be plenty of guys on here that will buy it off you, assuming it is reasonably servicable (eg not cracked in a million pieces like a dropped biscuit) and can be bought buy you and sold to them at a resonable price.

What type of MB tub is it in?

The (what appears to be- front oiler?) early generator would be useful to someone too if you didnt need it.

Cheers,
Ian.

I went back after getting some info from some fellow G members, and discovered a three inch crack above the distributor. I was really sad to see that. The block had GPW-6015 casted on the side, so it was not a wilson block. I hate to pass on this kind of stuff, but the guy wanted market value for the parts lot he had. I think you could get some of your money back on the investment but it would be a lot of work of cutting and dealing with heavily rusted bolts. As they say, time is money. The NC climate is really rough on antique vehicles!

Dont be so fast to throw this block to the scrap heap :!:

1st the crack: A crack above the dizzy can be fixed. I know of some that have been repaired by drilling at the ends of the crack and grinding out a trough and mixing up a good epoxy and filling it wit that. It can work. Another method is lock stitch.

2nd: That SN on the SN boss reads *GPW <-> 2263* That looks factory to me and Ford was making some motors possibly that early. So if the price is right for it all it would be worth it. The head and manifolds and other parts are worth that IF they are correct. The genny is NOT correct. nor it aoppears is the water pump with that fitting, unless it has been modified.

BTW I have GPW motor 2273  IT'd be a good one for Mike O'Conner  :!:

Good luck

After much debating, I purchased the parts. I ended up getting a cool converto dump trailer out of the mix, so I guess I did ok in the end. You guys convinced me the block was worth saving. I hope it finds the right home. Contact me if interested. I just sent you a message Michael.

Sounds like you got a nice deal with the Convertl Dump trailer and all. Send a pic of your trailer and the SN on the data plate to Dave Aro and also look at the 1/2 ton trailer site and send the info to Mario :?: :?: :?: They both have a register or trailers that are surviving.

Yeah the trailer was definitely the gem in the deal, but unfortunately it is missing the data plate. I wish people wouldn't remove data plates! :x So, I guess a lot of the history is lost. I don't believe these trailers had a serial number stamped on the frame. On the side I can barely make out "processed in 55 or 56." I'm guessing that is when it went to surplus. I'll post some photos once I get it back to the shop this weekend.
