F marked pancake filter price

Post by pjones » Tue May 17, 2011 10:16 am

what would you guys consider a reasonable price to pay for an original F marked pancake filter? i know this is a difficult question to answer but it would really help me out if i knew a ballpark figure to pay. also how can you tell a repro from an original F marked pancake filter? i would like to put the pancake filter on my VEP gpw and move its air filter to the later gpw
thanks for your thoughts and advice,
phil

Hi Phil,

I would expect an original "F" pancake air filter to run about 500 to 800 dollars... Have you seen many for sale?? They don't come around too often... One of the tougher original pieces to find along with a Sparton R214 of course!! I think they were built too flimsy for use in a jeep----- just my opinion, but maybe that is why they were superseded. Mike Stopforth has made a great reproduction for $350 or $400 dollars, I could be wrong but I don't think he put the "F"s on any of the ones he made. With only maybe 8000 to 10,000 GPWs made with the AC pancake filter, How many originals are left???

A repro pancake air filter does not have a hair oil bath filter. The ones I have seen have had a paper element. I think Mike Stopforth is the only person making the reproduction pancake air filter at this time. Hope this helps. Jon S.

Hi Phil,

I think unfortunately, if you are the buyer its going to hurt. You are more likely to see an unmarked pancake airfilter (and they are rare) for sale than an 'F' marked one. they seem to be fetching over $1000 depending if complete with top elbow and long bolt!
As Jon said, the repro pancakes come apart so the paper element can be changed.

Hi Phil,

Please see following pictures - the black one is the repro, the other cream one is original Willys version (no script 'f')

Image

The backs give the tell tell of an original!

The repro comes apart as this.

I am pretty sure the repro is a Mike Stopforth masterpiece and it's 'f' scripted! It is very difficult to see that its a
repro from the front unless you know exactly where to look. It came to me about 6/7 years ago.
Hopefully this gives an idea to all who are looking/contemplating.
Regards ... Peter

Is anyone still making a repro pancake air filter anymore?

Hi Michael,

I saw at least one reproduction pancake air filter for sale at the Tower Park meet in April... Mike Stopforth made a few of these some years back. I remember talking to him back then and he told me what a pain they were to make! I got the feeling he would not be making any more. Jon S.

I had a F marked Mike S. repro .

They are the best. Check with Ron Fitzpatrick. He may have some still.

And a non-Ford is what he's looking for.
