Re: Which way for bumpperettes?
Hi all,
So what your saying is when Jeeps were crated up then reassembled the troops had an instruction manual to put it back together So it didn't show which way up to put on the bumpperettes
Ian, I've got my order in with Santa for a set of them upside down boots to get me to Corowa next year.

Re: Which way for bumpperettes?
Dave- good to hear! We might even need to tether you to your van/ a jeep so you dont drift off when you remove those boots!
Luke- a repro is available of 'Ford truck 1/4 ton 4x4 model GPW instructions for unpacking and assembly of boxed vehicle, MKD (medium knock down) 148 cubic feet', but i dont know from who at the moment- i am looking into it and will let you know. I asume this is the reassembly manual Ben is referring too.
It is only a few pages long, but most interestingly, it shows the engine bay of a jeep- with pancake air filter with an OD (yes OD! or ford engine grey?) CROSSOVER TUBE!!!! Anyway, i`ll put this info (and scan the pic) into your crossover tube discussion (i only foud this pic just then when i went and got the book!). I cannot tell clearly enough if the jeep is a slat grill MB or a VEP GPW- my pics are abit grainy.
Tom- do you have any info on the jeep which is shown in this manual/booklet?
Chers,
Ian.

Re: Which way for bumpperettes?
Hi Ian,
The one Jon has is from early '45 since GPW 20596686 is from the last few days of Dec., '44. This GPW is using the last style of crate used at the Dallas assembly plant. The first crated GPW at Dallas was in August, '43.
Interesting that GPW 20596686 radiator appears to be black when it has been posted here on the GEE by a leading GPW researcher that ALL production GPW radiators were OD.
I don't have any of the uncrating manuals so I can not comment of the one you are discussing until you post the photos. I just now seen the one that Jon has on jeepdraw.Tom- do you have any info on the jeep which is shown in this manual/booklet?

Re: Which way for bumpperettes?
If you look at Farley Book 2 there is a British Mechanised Inspectorate Department (MID) drawing which shows the bumperettes fitted "upside down". Before seeing this i had assumed it was just a mistake on the part of those who were reassembling the Jeeps. The drawing shows the modifications (pre jerry-cans) required to carry British "flimsy" cans on the angles of the front fenders - and also shows some sort of modification to the spare wheel carrier. I wonder if the bumperettes were upside down to allow fitment of a second spare wheel?
There are also two hooks fitted to the rear cross member - does anybody know what these are for - could the bumperettes have been bolted upside down for some reason associated with these hooks?

Re: Which way for bumpperettes?
Is it just the quality of the photo I am looking at or does the radiator in the jeep on page 7 of the manual looks to be a WILLYS radiator due to the location of the ribs on top of the tank and the number of them...?
There may be a reason for that....

Re: Which way for bumpperettes?
Hi Chuck,
Yes, it is a Willys type radiator and yes there is a reason for it being used. Late '43 through the end of GPW production GPWs are not required to have a GPW style / marked radiator.

Re: Which way for bumpperettes?
There are quite a few photographic references to Willys type radiators in aaw 3 showing uncrated GPWs with the 5 solder hole tabs on the upper tank. Sometimes you have to manipulate the photo lighting to bring out the detail.
Willys radiators being a factory fit were mentioned to me by a Melbourne based researcher many years ago and it took quite a bit of digging before I came around to his theory being tangible.
Bill.

Hi all,
Just watching the film The Tuskegee Airmen and spotted a Jeep supposedly in North Africa which had its bumpperettes upside down, but also they all had Gerrycans on the back
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.

A photo illustrating field mod of inverted bumperettes. Some other interesting modifications to a script Willys as well.

Re: Which way for bumpperettes?
Hi all,
Ok i'm sorry to dig this one up again I have just received my new issue of The Journal of the Military Jeep in Action. This is a new mag by Mark Askew, it uses old origanal photos of Jeeps, many been seen before. I came across a photo of a Jeep towing a farm roller, there was a caption that stated, An early Willys MB in England, then goes on to say, note that is an early Ford one of a batch that was made with upside down bumpers. I have spoke to Mark but he said that the caption was with the photo.
So does anybody know anything about this batch of Fords Tom have you anything mentioned in the records
Regards,
Dave
