Which way for bumpperettes?

Post by jeepfinger » Fri Dec 11, 2009 11:38 pm

Hi all,
I don't know if this topic has been brought up on the G before, but if it has i'm sure that you will tell me :D
So here I go. I have been browsing some Jeep books and have come accross pictures of Script Ford's with there bumpperettes which seem to be upside down :? I have also seen a picture of a script Willys the same. Is this just done on Script Jeeps for some reason :?:
Regards,
Dave

Thanks Jon,
I have seen that photo before, so that's at one of the Ford factories :?: ,
If you look in John Farleys, War Time Jeep Vol 1 one pages 102 103 107 and 111 you can clearly see the bumpperettes the otherway up. I guess that it was done as a field mod for some reason.
Hi Jon are you of to Corowa in March :?: If so I'll try and meet up if thats Ok.

Davv

Not sure about Corowa at this time, there's a few things happening that may change my plans. I'll know when we're closer to the event.

Cheers

Hi Dave,

I would have to agree with Jon on this one. They should all be the normal way up.

However... due to how many jeeps arrived here in Australia (unassembled), often the bumperettes were installed upside down upon assembly (compared to the factory shot from Jon and as you have seen in the pics you reference). If you look on the Australian War Memorial website ( http://www.awm.gov.au" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and go to the 'search our collections' then type in: jeep ), you will see many Australian jeeps which have them upside down!

As a result of this, an order was issued by the Australian Army during the war to rectify this problem to all jeeps which had their bumperettes installed upside down! I'm fairly certain I have a copy of this somewhere- if I can find it, I shall post it up.

Cheers,
Ian.

I have noticed that many airfield jeeps have the bumperettes upsidedown. This was so that crewmen could stand on them for the ride to and from the flightline. Certainly possible it was done for the same reason elsewhere.

Hi,
Thanks Ian, I have had a look on the AWM site and looked at the Jeep photos [ well a few of them ] I notice a script in Nort Africa with the bumpperettes upside down. I guess it may be another one of them things
Ian whats it like at the AWM :?: I may take a look when i'm in Australia next March. Don't take this the wrong way, but I've just thought of something  If the bumpperettes are upside down on your Jeeps there really the otherway up because you are Down Under. Sorry about that, just being a stupid POM.
Thanks for your idea GIJeeps I guess that they did what worked fro them.
Regards,
Dave

Hi Dave,
Its quite good at the AWM- a very good overall display of both the people, equipment and many other aspects of australias involvement in many conflicts dating back to when we were settled. I would recommend you stop in for a look on your way to corowa- it is well worth the visit and since its free, if its not your cup of tea (no pommy pun intended!) you wont feel so bad.

As for the bumperettes, i get where your coming from. So, based on that, you will need to bring your upside down boots so you can walk the right way up when you get down here coming up to corowa! Dont be sorry, i`m an aussie- i can see the funny side in everything!

Cheers,
Ian.

Hello,

On the picture, the tires look like "Good Years" :?: Ford or Firestone look different...
What do you think ?

Alexandre.

Hello Alexandre,

The tires in the photo that Jon posted are Goodyear tires since the photo was taken before any Ford or Firestone tires were made in 6.00-16 with straight bar tread.

I don't know if they still do, but Beechwood Canvas used to sell Goodyear tires, manufactured in Columbia using the original Goodyear molds. Might be worth checking on.

Sorry, Alex, but I have recently and unfortunately ruined an original Goodyear removing it from a combat rim. We were being very carefull as I wanted to pass it on to someone for use. It had some tread on it, and only a little dry rot SHOWING, but when we were breaking the bead, the machine ripped a section about a foot long. We were using a very old school machine were most of the work is done by hand, with the machine basically only providing a way to hold the rim and multiply your leaverage. Sorry.
