What colour was the priming coat on 1st contract GPWs?

Post by GPW7588 » Thu Jan 08, 2009 5:12 am

Hello GPW owners and lovers.

Does anybody know what colour the priming undercoat should on an unrestored 1st contract VEP GPW?

Should it be the old RED LEAD type primer? This is not to be confused with the pinkish/red primer used today, as found on many new jeep fenders, panels etc.

Thanks
Eugene McCabe - GPW7588 Script

Hi Eugene,

Many early 42 GPWs that I have been able to check have had a yellow-green zinc chromate primer.

The primer is one of the items that I track in my GPW database. What has used on your GPW 7588 ?

We own GPW-712 and GPW-713 and both have the yellow-green zinc chromate primer Tom was talking about.

The driver side mirror arm on GPW 30926 was painted zinc chromate. It was a yellowish green. Not sure about the rest of the vehicle.

Tom, I'm sorry to say, I didn't know you tracked this. I didn't see any primer and have had the tub sandblasted. I'll ask the gentleman who sandblasted it to see if he noticed the primer.

Tom, We restored GPW-713 back in 1990 so we went through all the pics we took during the restoration and found two that confirmed the zinc chromate primer. Here are a couple of the pics. Will continue to search for you to fill in the blanks. GPW-712 has yet to be restored so we will check the primer on it as well. As a note we believe that the early frames built by Midland Steel for Willys and Ford we shipped to the plants in a black primer or paint. This is just our observation of GPW-713 and two slat grill frames which had black primer/paint as their first coat.

Hi Tom,

I didnt know you tracked this either! Unfortunately i didnt pay much attnetion to the primer on 11730, however like Don, i reviewed my pics and found that the following:

Body- green primer
Hood/bonnet- green primer
Fenders- i am fairly sure they were red primer, though i cant remember exactly.
Frame- no idea sorry.

Cheers
Ian.

Hi Guys,

Stringray - I don't know of any data that connects A. O. Smith with MB or GPW frames. MB frames and the MB type frames used on GPWs were made by Midland Steel. The A. O. Smith thing seems to be a 20 plus year repeated error.

To Luke, Ian and others - when it comes to GPWs I try to track everything. If I have not started tracking an item yet I will add it to the list when I see it brought up.

Tom do you have other Dallas 1st contract jeeps with the "S" on the Cowl? PM is perfectly fine for this discussion. Luke

Tom, Thanks for the correction. We edited our statement deleting AO Smith and adding Midland Steel as far as the production of the early MB/GPW frames. Didnt want to continue a twenty year error. Thanks again!

GPW 2956 had the yellow-green zinc chromate primer on the tub, hood, grille, and fenders. When I removed the firewall pad it had only the yellow-green zinc chromate primer with no OD sprayed over it. This would indicate the firewall pad was in placed when the OD was sprayed on.

GPW 2956 willys frame had black paint under the OD. It looked laike shiny black to me and most of the OD flaked off when I was restoring it.

According to Tom's research of my data plate this is a Louiville built jeep.

My script GPW has that yellow - green primer too. I always thought it was a bit strainge, but now I know its normal. Thank you everyone for bringing it up on a thread for discussion. I just learned something new.
