It had a large glob of brazing that couldn't be removed or made to look good.

Exactly my fear. And I'm sure despite being told "if it doesn't look good, I'm not paying". It would look terrible and I'd pay.

Was it at least functional after being repaired?

Luke,

the repair will be functional, it will just be visible. Is this what is holding you up getting on the road or just another step in the process of restoration. Brazing will work until you can find a replacement manifold. If you want the repop or a non ford manifold that will work fine too, or you can patiently wait until you find another useable ford manifold. it boils down to your schedule

when I get home, it will be a significant hold-up to first start-up, but not really "on the road". It's the WO/non-Ford part on an attempt at a Factory resto that's holding me up, along with potential quality issues of a repro. If the repros are good quality, the appeal of a brand new part is certainly strong, especially when it's subjected to so much heat and stress. The old ones are all bound to fail sooner or later.

Perhaps some work with a die grinder could be done to "create" a Ford marked repro?

Sounds to me that you start the search for a good usable Ford part. If a quick search does not find a part then braze it up and use it until an appropriate replacement is found. As you probably know these things are not readily available. There was a nice one on Ebay here last week that sold in the $80ish range. After I find my replacement manifold I will let ya have the next one. My manifold is missing a section of the bolt hole on the rear most mounting hole. I have had a leisurely search for the last few years and still haven't bought one.

$80-range is a good price for a serviceable one. BTW, I was told by a guy on FB G503 page that he repaired one with the bolt hole broken and it looks fine, after some grinding. I suspect that's the "easy" side to fix.

I've just scanned the thread, and it looks like several photos are corrupted. I don't know of any way to fix them. If no one has suggestions, I'll go through and delete them. Aside from adding color to the thread, they are useless and distracting.

UPDATE. It has started in the past, but had to be bottle fed in order to stay running. Last night, I finally successfully filled the fuel bowl and the carb functioned as intended and she ran, on her own. I get around 60 PSI at current idle setting and 80+ PSI when it's throttled.

This weekend, I hope to get some water in the system and run it operating temperature.

Yes. Confirmed my wiring harness is on the way! I'm not sure I'm ready for it quite yet, but the funds were availible and the stock was availible.

Dum question, which way does the data tag affix to the generator? Standing at the fender, tag upside down?

Luke:
When standing on the pass side and reading the genny tag:
1) GEG-5001A (Upside down)
2) GEG-5002D (Upside down)\
3) Ford (right side up)
4) GEG-5101D (right side up)

The early gennys were simply Dodge (or other application?) gennys and on the Dodge motor the genny is on the LEFT side of the motor which would, when mounted, have the tag right side up.

I believe your GPW-12078 would have had a GEG-5001A genny....which would have been too early for the Ford version of the GEG-5001A or the GEG-5002D gennys.

Zwoodsman and I moved the tub onto some saw horses last weekend so I can access it better. I washed all the dust off of it this weekend, and I have a new wiring harness sitting on the shelf, and there should be a new firewall grommet set and firewall pad sitting at the house today or tomorrow.

I re-spot welded one of the tail light brackets as well this weekend. Time to apply some OD to a few parts (hopefully this week) so that work on the tub can commence!

There are a couple of holes to drill and a couple of broken bolts to extract, and of course LOTS of threads to chase!
