Does anybody know what the proper jack would be for the GP ?

Good question. The GP maintenance manual mentions the jack. However the GP parts manual does not list the jack with the tools. Has anyone found the jack p/n hiding somewhere in the parts manual?

An interesting question and apparently no one has an answer for it ..... .

I looked at the GP Parts List, 'Service Requirements' book, Maintenance Manual and the Feb 29, 1944 version of SNL G-658 Master Parts List:

GP Parts List: nothing listed.
Maintenance Manual simply states to 'place jack under axle' without further identification as to type or design, and no images.
Service Requirements has the 'kit of tools' pictured on page 2 of part 1, but the image does not include a jack.
SNL G-658 has a listing on page 609 of 'jack assemblies'. Every other GP tool is listed, but when it comes to the jack, the list has six different jacks, and covers every type of Ford built for the US Army except the GP (indicated by the codes A1 to A4, for each of the US Government contracts for GPs). The first jack listed is for codes A5 to A8 (for the GPW), and 'X' for the GPA.

Seems hard to believe no jack was issued for the GP. And no, I don't have an answer either ....

Below is photo #4 from the Ford Service Requirements manual showing the GP tools. The jack is not shown. However, tire iron, GP-17019, is shown.

I ordered the GP-17019 tire iron drawing from Ford. The drawing states to make this tire iron from Ford 78-17081 (jack handle / tire iron). The 78-17081 jack handle was used on Ford cars and trucks. Possibly the GP-17019 tire iron was also used as a jack handle?

If the GP was supplied with a jack, maybe it was a ratchet type or screw type with a rectangular receptacle to use the GP17019 flat tire iron as the handle?

I am just guessing here. Someone with more knowledge please comment.

Is there a possibility that the tire iron is used in a jack similar to the one discussed by Greg over on the Tool forum:

Hartofoak - Yes, I guess it is possible that the GP could have used the Spun Steel screw jack with flat handle. I received a PM from jeepjop with the same theory.

The thread posted goes into a convincing argument that the Spun Steel flat handle jack was used on the MA and then changed to the round handle Spun Steel jack for the MB. The MA started production in late June, 1941, almost 4 months after the GP started production. Maybe the GP had the Spun Steel jack and Willys copied the idea?

The only BRC jack information is the black silhouette from the tools photo.

As of now, unless someone comes forward with new information, no one knows what jack was used on the GP, BRC, MA. We only have theories. The MB we know for sure used the Spun Steel round handle jack.

Although it seems hard to believe.....no jack was issued with the Ford GP.

It must be remembered when the GP contracts were let the vehicle weight was still an issue. Anything that came with the vehicle added to the total weight.

The GP was delivered without a jack and the Government (using arm) was to supply this item. This is why you will not see a listing for a jack in the various manuals.

As for the photo of the "tool kit" ......it must be remembered that this was a "set up ( * ) " photo to be used in the Manuals supplied with the vehicles and as such should not be taken as "Gospel" as to what was or was not included ....nor should this photo be used to determine what type / make / finish the various wrenches/tools the vehicles were actually delivered with.


( * ...Tools were needed for a photo to put in the manual and tools that were the same wrench sizes were gathered by the Art/Photo Department and laid out for this photo.)

The government will supply it for the GP!
That is great info. So when I have a flat tire, who do I call to bring it? :D

Aw....Jim.....you go to your unit Quartermaster and draw out a Govt. Provided Jack to use on your vehicle...........or...you just get a few guys to lift the corner of the jeep up and change the tire.

That's what them handles on the sides are for.... :-)..............

:idea: ahhhh, sooooo,..... our GP driver with the flat has to draw an issue of three 'Privates, GP for the lifting of' and one 'Private, counterweight, GP' ..... no wonder there were 'manpower shortages'!! :lol:

Seriously, thanks for the replies, Jim: places it nicely in perspective. It does lead to the question: what jack was issued by the Q/master Corps? Was there a standardised jack for a range of lighter vehicles which would thus be appropriate to carry in a GP, or does the 'issued by the using arm' leave the jack type to be carried wide open, and any small capacity jack of the period becomes a possibility?

You can see how much heavier the MA was compared to the GP......it takes five GI's to lift the MA and "only" three for the GP.... :-)

I don't believe the GP jack is stronger than a MA jack but I would say that the GP jack is far smarter.
