Universal Rifle Rack location in an M38A1?

Post by clintm20 » Sun Oct 19, 2008 8:50 am

Did the M38A1 have a provision for mounting the carbine holder (ww2 style) similar to the way ww2 jeeps did on the bottom of the inside of the windshield frame? If not there anywhere else? A friend wants to put one in his 38A1 but wants to know if it is correct.

Thanks!

No. Most common rifle/carbine mount was the Vietnam era floor mount that had a latch on the dash.

I'm toying with the idea of putting one in my own rig. Did the A1 use the stand-off bracket shown (that's an M37 in the picture)? I remember seeing the template for making that bracket with the kit.

Anybody willing to post a picture of their installation?

Thanks!

Here is another place. TNJ Murray. Not quite as cheap at $25, but not bad.

No problem. Here is mine installed on the dash of my A1. Thought about doing one on the other side of the grab bar but am putting a roll cage in it.

I saw a pic of a canadien m38a1 that had one mounted on the windshield frame just the other day. You could see it sticking up through the windshield.

Oops. It was a Danish Jeep, but I was searching for Canadian Jeeps when I found it.

On the M38A1 CDN series, the FNC1A1 rifle mount has a rubber butt plate-sized boot on the floor and a two-sided diamond spring clip on the dash. In the mount, the crew commander' knees are trapped by the pistol grip and magazine. There are a couple of standard locations for the 9mm SMG, most common is on the hump between the seats beside the hand brake. I personnaly preferred to park my SMG on the transmission hump with the magazine flat and the pistol grip upright beside the hump. A full size rifle in a Jeep with the doors on is ridiculous.

RE the type shown by Cuz, Does anyone know when these were introduced? Maybe a date on installation drawings?
I'd just like to know how early they could have been used.

Thanks
WG

The earliest I recall seeing them was the 60's.
