For vehicles with the 129 ring gear and newer style enclosed drive starter motor...here is some info you need to check out.
01 78220X 12V Starter Nippon Denso Toyota Landcruiser 2F gasoline engine will fit perfectly just with minor modification (enlargement) of the 2 mounting holes. The number is an OZ one so may be different in the States.

Another 12-volt starter that will work and still can be found for a fair price on the late M38 & M38A1 jeeps with the 1/2" mounting bolts is a Chevrolet starter that fits the 235 6-cylinder engines (1955-1962 cars/1960-1962 trucks). You will need to grind alittle off the bottom flange so the starter flange will clear the engine, make it look more like a football. You will easily see what I'm talking about when you do it.....

Re: Starter Motors
Glen- i bought the starter, ground the flange off, and installed it. It doesn't engage the ring gear correctly on the M38a1 engine. (129 tooth). Looking at the Chevy starter- it has a smaller shaft than the military 24V starter, so transfering the bendix looks like a no-go.Another 12-volt starter that will work and still can be found for a fair price on the late M38 & M38A1 jeeps with the 1/2" mounting bolts is a Chevrolet starter that fits the 235 6-cylinder engines (1955-1962 cars/1960-1962 trucks). The issue seems to be that the teeth of the Chevy starter are too short, and don't engage the ring gear. To get this to work, i'm going to try modifying the start housing (grinding the material off carefully) to let the starter axis move closer to the ring gear, and will report back with the mod results.
Sorry- This might have worked on another m38a1, but on my 1953, it doesnt;.
Thanks!
Paul

Re: Starter Motors
Paul, sorry for the bum steer on the starter. This mod was told to me by two older gentleman who had done several of them and when I tried it, it worked for me. It must not be a "sure thing".....

Re: Starter Motors
the landcruiser starter is a close copy off the gmc 270 engine from ww2 .the bellhousing on the gmc 6 was 3/8" longer than chevy.the toyota fj60 from the 80s has a gear reduction starter and would probaly make the little 4 banger really spin.being the owner of several landcruisers and jeeps i will have to try this.
