Re: Navy and USMC Registration Numbers
Hi Mark,
It's a standard variety GPW. I should have posted that it is also marked "USN" and "134465" on the left and right side of the front bumper. The side body number is above the rear wheel well and I assume on both sides of the body but the photo was taken looking down from a building or tower with a front-passenger side view.

Hi Bob!
That looks like a worked over MZ-2 with either a 1947 or 1949 kit as I see a hole where the driver's side grab bar should be and the kits are unique.
So, is this some test run? Was there a caption along with the photo or any date?

Mark,
It is a USMC test. The photo is not dated but the report is June 13, 1949. Here is some more info...

Hello, my cjv35 has a delivery month of April, the hood # 162760, vehicle Id # 10670. It does have some other numbers under the USMC paint in white but can't make them out. My windshield has a #2 on it on the inside left. Hope this helps.

That jeep (USMC 37136) appears to be one of the first MB-Marine jeeps.

Re: Navy and USMC Registration Numbers
I've looked closely at the photo and the jeep has been repainted with the numbers moved up front on the side of the cowl in a common font and style of field painted markings.
You can see the hooks clearly but the rings are in shadow... they show upon some exposure changes.
No windshield, a shovel and a Garand where the passenger see should be, three cartons in the back with another in the hands of one of the men. There is a squad of men there.
There are lots of little details in that photo.

Tientsin-Peiping highway. China 1946 Major Portillo assembles the convoy and armed escort outside the city limits of Tientsin before proceeding towards Peiping. Once in motion, the vehicles must keep a 100 Yard interval.

Re: Navy and USMC Registration Numbers
Hello Gentlemen,
I was at the National Archives last Friday and found some USN and USMC pictures with registrations numbers for your list.
USMC 53169. It is a radio jeep used at the Signal School at Camp Lejeune, NC and taken on July 28, 1943.
USMC 48661 and 48656. These jeeps are in a motor pool at Camp Lejeune, NC on 21 Jan 1946. The caption reads "Recruit Fix - Motor Transport School. Supervising tune-up work on Marine Corps jeeps is Staff Sergeant Paul Hankins, (address). This is the final phase of the twelve week automotive mechanics course of Motor Transport School."
USN 134456. This "Radar jeep" is push ashore at New River, NC. Taken Feb 22, 1944. Caption reads "On the beach" - After a laborious struggle through the surf, the radar jeep is emerging onto the dry beach."
USMC 117679. A radio jeep taken at Quantico, VA on 30 Nov 1948. Caption reads "Deep Water Jeep - Water up to the drivers' neck is no obstacle to this deep water fording radio jeep being improved for amphibious operations by the Marine Corps Equipment Board."
I'll be glad to forward them to someone if they want to post them.
