1951 ex-Navy CJ-3A still in service in 2009 (PICS)

Post by Kirby89 » Wed Dec 09, 2009 1:31 am

I am new to Jeeps and this web site so I hope this is the right forum for making this posting but I recently encountered a ex-US Navy CJ-3A that is still in government service with the Saugus, Massachusetts (USA) Civil Defense department.

I took some pictures of it at an "open house" and will attempt to post them here. I would appreciate learning more about this Jeep from you as I probably will see it again. One question is this - I thought "CJ" Jeeps were all made for the civilian market yet this has a Navy data plate??

Like I said, I am new to Jeeps, I have been an admirer of military vehicles from afar for many years but have never owned one - maybe someday.......

It also has a CJ-2A body. Notice right over over the steering wheel, it has the place for the shifting linkage when the CJ-2A was set up with "three on the tree".

All 2A 3A dash panels retained the indent over the steering colum.
3A body, wheel wells are shorter for more leg room on 3A and 3B models.
Interesting, mounting the tandem tow bar to the bumper.

Thanks for the info. Ed. I never knew that about the 3A, thought it was only found on the 2A. I learn something new everyday.

Appears to have been bought under an ARMY contract: DA-20-088-ORD-7376.

Note that it lacks the bow brackets on the side(a CJ-2A feature) and that the Ignition switch is in the typical CJ-3A location. It also has the round Front Drive Flanges, a CJ-3A feature, and has the post 1950 Guages that pivot at the bottom such as the 800205 Temperature Guage.
