Tac markings on my jeep

Post by Kings » Thu Jan 11, 2018 1:28 am

Hello all,
As I've put in previous posts I'm giving my Ex USMC 1944 MB a bit of a refresh and am going to put back on the USMC markings (at long last). Anyway when I restored it 15 ish yrs ago there was USMC on one bumperette (2" tall, no periods/dots) and the remains of a TAC mark on the other bumperette.
The paint remains were as follows :
White bordered flat bottomed shape. I found the two LOWER corners, but nothing above, so it was not a square/rectangle. It can only have been a triangle/Semi circle.
Border was about 1/2" width and about 7-8" long.
Red infill.
Three white III in the middle.

I've google it and would appear to be 4th Marines and the 4th were on Okinawa. What is the opinion of others on the G please.

There was no front bumper on the jeep when I got it. I have uncovered the USMC reg No on the hood USMC 55309 and have seen film footage (critical past) of a water bowser on Okinawa in 1945 with the reg number one digit out from mine.
Thanks all
Kings

The 4th was on Iwo Jima and set to invade Japan's mainland. Not on Okinawa.

See here: http://www.marines.mil/Portals/59/Publi ... 6300_1.pdf

Photos would help!

My dad was in the 4th from the start to the end... two and a half years that change him a lot.

Hello Mark,
Thanks for your help as always.
Sorry no pics as they will not show anything really just flecks of red and white. Maybe if it were nowadays with a better camera ... but oh well. The shape was definitely a flat bottomed shape being narrower on the top. So it can only have been a Triangle or a Semi circle

The Okinawa link was :
1. I uncovered USMC ? 5 3 0 9 on the hood. The first digit wasn't really readable but people on the G (maybe yourself ??) suggested it would have been a 5 given that the jeep is 1944.
2. Critical Past has this bowser on Okinawa with a reg No 55310.

I do have some bags of dirt from hat channel and various other cavities - maybe I can have that tested.
thanks for help again.

You need to post pictures of the markings, USMC unis marks are difficult as a few div. symbols are almost identical

Mark,

What you stated about the 4 th is basically true. However my good friend Delbert Littrell USMC who was 4 th Mar Div artillery made the Okinawa invasion due to the 4 th had the 155 Howitzers. PFC Littrell made five invasion, Marshalls, Saipan, Tinian, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. After Saipan the 4 th went from the 105 to the 155's.

The 4th Marine REGIMENT was in fact at Okinawa. Part of the 6th Marine Division. I thought that’s what you were talking about. The 4th Marine DIVISION was NOT at Okinawa as others have stated.

To all,

In response to my statement concerning PFC Littrell, USMC service after Iwo Jima when the 155 Howitzer outfit he was part of and this outfit was assigned to support the 4 th Marine Division. Accord to PFC Littrell service records, between Apr 16 1944 and Aug 30 1944, Btry M 4th 105 Arty Bn was designated Btry O 4th 155mm How Bn Cor Arty. Then to Hdqtrs Btry 3 rd Corps Arty Jun 16, 1945. Jun 16, 1945 Desig Chg to 6 th Sep 155 mm How Bn on Oct 1, 1945. Nov 11, 1945 PFC Littrell was aboard the U.S.S. Adair and separated from service Nov 30, 1945 NTC Great Lakes, ILL.

In reviewing this information, it appears that PFC Littrell 155 mm How Bn was a 3 rd Corps asset.

I stand corrected.

For what it is worth,

Frank

Footnote:
PFC Littrell, USMC is still with us and kicking at 95 years of age. Quite the gentleman to say the least and an honor to know him.
