Jerome. Congratulations on the acquisition! For instruments, you should get on the www.j3-cub.com forum. There is a tremendous amount of information available for the asking.

Doc,

I'm a few years late to this thread, but as a fellow pilot and MV restorer, it's impressive to see your desire and effort put into this project! Well done and I hope it continues to bring you job. Looks awesome!

Hi Sean

I love the bird, and I took the opportunity of a WE trip to the US to visit the Piper Museum in Lock haven : a real treat and a nostalgic visit to this mythical place.

All the best

Jerome, I wish I would have known about your visit, I am about 2 hours from there and would have flown mine out to see you! If you're ever in the neighborhood again, let me know.

well,
I made it to the 100th anniversary airshow at Henry Post Field at Fort Sill
it had originally been scheduled for March but was postponed due to terrible weather
so was rescheduled for September 1
it was a once and only time that a civilian aircraft could land at this military airfield
(Henry Post Field at Fort Sill)
we got to take off and make a pass over the airfield before flying home
ended up flying about 1,100 miles over 14 hours!!
as my plane only has a 12 gallon tank,
I had to stop for fuel about a dozen times.
the coolest airport by far (excluding Henry Post Field)
was the Sundance airport in Oklahoma...was really a cool modern airport
the Amelia Earhart airport in Kansas was pretty neat as well.
was a great experience in a plane with no radios
and a Garmin 96 GPS that I inherited from my dad about 30 years ago
was a 'fly by the seat of your pants' kinda journey
BUT IT WAS VERY HOT!!!!
was about >100F each day
was neat to take the old L-4B home after 76 years!!
dodged a couple of thunderstorms on the way back
but, believe it or not
I had a tailwind BOTH ways
my average speed for the whole trip was about 82 MPH!
not bad for a plane that flys about 70mph
was pretty proud of this little warbird
it never missed a beat
and brought me back home safely
after dodging a few thunderstorms
was refreshing to be back home in my own hangar
where the temperature was in the 70's!!

Iowa: Looks like you had a blast. Question for you...Did you find an original reel for the antenna or fabricate one? I've had my eye out for one, but they seem to vanish within moments of being listed somewhere. I need one, or the the drawings to fabricate one for my L-5B.
