Ron, a 12 volt military starter is kind of unusual. Most military aircraft were 24 volts. The main exceptions were pre WWII Navy aircraft. It could be for a military version of a civilian aircraft, such as a Piper or Stinson, maybe a Cessna. In that case it might be worth a fair amount, since it could be used in the civilian version.
Aviation items are usually more expensive than automotive. I noticed the price for the engaging dog for a Bendix unit was over 500 bucks. I would recommend you talk to someone at a flight service outfit at an airport who had a Bendix spec sheet and could look it up. The base model number is 36E21. Whoever buys it will have to run it through a licensed shop to have it checked and certified for flight (yellow tag).
