Remarkable. I hope the souls of the crew may now rest in peace.

halfax bombers

Post by adam wright » Sun Dec 03, 2006 6:46 am

Hi i live in North yorkshire UK you could say this is Halifax country as most of the airfields around here during WW11 were populated by Halifaxes and the canadian aircrew who flew ! sadly a large number of these aircraft are still here in the ground and quite alot of them still have the remains of the crew on board i sit not more than 1/4 of a mile from one such aircraft !! i think this is very sad and would personly go and get the remains out and put them in the right place but all these crash sites are clased as war graves and cant be touched very sad ,we did excavate one halifax over ten years ago we could not believe how much of it was left in the ground luckily the crew had jumped from this plane well before it crashed !! .

What I find interesting is that the british gov or the canadians arn't involved in the recovery of the remains. here in the US we take this sort of thing very seriously and are still Iding ww2 remains and other wars (korea and VN) still with active missions to do the recovery work.

I find it quite sad if the nation who they gave thier life for didn't try to recover them if possible.

Back in 1977 I was involved with the recovery of a USAAF B-17 that had been discovered by a dregging crew in the Thames estuary. I still have a few relics from that excavation. Fortunately there were no KIAs on board.
