I just finished it last week. I was upset at how easy some of the Japanese officers got out of their crimes.Probably more of this went on than was ever known. The Japanese had their forces spread on so many of those tiny islands that it was impossible to keep track of all of them.

It's amazing how the only airman to be rescued ( and not eaten ) went on to be president of the United States. What a story.

I read it when it came out in 2003, the treatment of the POWs was horrendous. But not all that were responsable were cought. Good thing a sub found George senior, as the tide and a patol boat were after him.

I believe we have come a long way since the turn of the 20th Century and espescially since 1940. However, I don't condone the inhumane treatment of anyone. Many of the Axis powers got away scott free, which is unfortunate. They should have been hanged or shot. Today, I believe we are often too nice to our captives in modern day warfare. The enemy wants to annialate us, and we still give them three hots, a cot, clothing, and a place to get out of the rain. BTW, the book is a very good read and an eye opener for the naive.

Hey, war is war and is brutal. Don't start critisizing the actions of those in war on either side. If you are going to win a war your army has to savage the other. The winner has the luxury of defining what a war crime is. That's as simple as it is.

I was not addressing anyone in particular. Just making a statement of how wars are won. I read Flags of our Fathers and Fly Boys, both are great books and very factual. My father served in the Pacific. His very good friend and business partner was assigned a flame thrower on Iwo. He told me some very blood curtling stories concerning the brutality on both sides. He stated before he died that he was sure he was going to hell because he cooked so many 'Japs'.
