Guy Finds His Dad’s P-38 Strafing 16 MM Film

How Cool Is That?

Imagine going through some stuff and finding a film containing your dad’s gun camera footage from World War II. That’d be really cool right? It happened too.

Not only did a Youtube subscriber by the name of jwgrenning find it, he uploaded it for everyone to see. As an added bonus, his dad was alive and provided the details he remembered about that mission. Now that’s spectacular.

The pilot’s name is Lieutenant H.F. Grenning Jr. He was part of the 434th Fighter Squadron of the 479th Fighter Group and on this mission was tasked with strafing German airfields. On August 18th, 1944, he set of from Nancy-Essey airport in Eastern France and headed for his target.

According to him, about 35 P-38s were part of this strafing attack and was quite a success. As you’ll see in this footage, bullets were flying everywhere and you can see some clear shots as well.

At the end of the mission, 43 German aircraft were destroyed and 28 damaged. Out of those, Lt. Grenning Jr. destroyed a Ju-88 and He-111K and damaged 2 Ju-88s. All in a day’s work.
